Daily Devotion, August 24, 2016: Take your sinful desires to God
Romans 6:13 – “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God….”
Attempting to maintain a Godly lifestyle in a Godless world can be really frustrating.
Constantly, trying to rid your mind off your sinful desires, while everyone else is tapping into these same wants can be outrightly difficult.
While giving in may seem like the only way out of this struggle, Romans 6: 15- 17 warns us of the dangers of taking the easiest route.
“What then? Shall we sin because we are not under the law but under grace? By no means! Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?”
20 – 21 goes on to say, “When you were slaves to sin, you were free from the control of righteousness. What benefit did you reap at that time from the things you are now ashamed of? Those things result in death!”
Colossians 3:5 adds, “Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.”
Today, we have been shown the best way to lose these desires, this way is by the grace of God and with His help.
In order to kill our sinful nature and desires, we need to be guided by the spirit, not the flesh.
Galatians 5: 16-18 tells us, “So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
Some might ask why we need to let go of these desires, thankfully, the answer can also be found in the Bible.
Galatians 5: 19 says, “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Let us all strive to let go off our sinful desires, in order to gain eternal salvation.
