Molly Vulpyne goes solo and releases her debut EP, fresh from two blazing sets at Rebellion Festival. It’s a four song blast with a few surprises says Wayne AF Carey…
The first track Dead In The Water cracks straight in with an infectious raw riff that brings back the heady days of 90s grunge punk, updated by the great voice of Molly who doesn’t need to shout to get her point across. It’s a tight backline of drums and bass from her exemplary backing band with a guest slot from Peter Jones of Paranoid Visions to turn this chunk of a tune into an anthem. Romantic is a sad yet uplifting tune that has a Smiths / Sundays vibe running through yet whacked up by Meryl Streek providing the funky drumbeats and abrasive punk guitar sound that the man himself uses to great effect on his own tunes. A great song that some describe as sounding like Alkaline Trio if they were fronted by Molly. They have a point.
Nothing Fillls has some great buzz bass with a sliding riff that changes key constantly which sounds thrilling and has a QOTSA feel to it as Molly delivers here top as fuck vocals. Inertia Right Hand Man is a beautiful tune with a pysch acoustic guitar riff, while Molly’s vocals are an uncanny hybrid of Courtney Love (Doll Parts) and Kristin Hersh at her best. It just drags you in and hypnotises you.
Let’s talk about Molly…
Molly Vulpyne, known as the guitarist and vocalist of dynamic punk rock duo Vulpynes and for recent collaborations with avant-garde punk artist Meryl Streek, is now unveiling her inaugural solo endeavour. In her own words, Molly describes this as “an experiment I miraculously achieved without overthinking, one that feels truly authentic.”
The four songs featured on the Amortise EP were penned over the past few years and reflect a different side of Molly that didn’t quite align with her previous musical projects. Tired of being pigeonholed as the “angry shouty girl,” Molly sought a change of pace. She used this solo record as an opportunity to express a different side. Featuring poignant and unfiltered lyrics referencing love and the darkness of the mind, Molly’s new project embraces newfound vulnerability. Intertwined with haunting harmonies and Molly’s
signature riffs, her solo work maintains a distinctive edge.
Meryl Streek takes charge of the drums and beats, bass duties are expertly handled by Tony Carberry, known for his work with the Lee Harveys, while the track Dead in the Water features the talents of Peter Jones from Paranoid Visions. “The whole EP is lyrically more vulnerable and honest than anything I’ve ever written, explains Molly. “A lot of the phrasing is quite succinct and ‘to the point’ – nothing dressed up in metaphors or bows. It’s simply whatever way I was thinking or feeling at the time.” The EP’s opening song Dead In The Water is a fiery, stomping track that quickly gets to the core of where Molly is headed to in her new phase. “It’s a tongue in cheek track about feeling repulsed by your inability to stand up for yourself,” she states. “It’s watching yourself act like an idiot in the 3rd person but finding it impossible to stop!”
A promising debut from a passionate punk star in the making.
