A tragic event at a white-garment church in Ibadan has claimed the lives of five worshippers, while several others are receiving treatment at the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC) in Olodo, Oyo State.
The incident occurred during a church feast known as “Ipese,” held last Sunday, sparking concerns about the safety of the gathering.As of Saturday evening, around 50 worshippers had been discharged from the IDC after receiving necessary medical care.Local sources reveal that the church community is grappling with the aftermath of this unfortunate occurrence, which has drawn the attention of various government agencies, including law enforcement and health officials. Representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO) are also reportedly involved.
A church member mentioned that the cause of the deaths remains unclear. “I ate the same beans as the victims, and nothing happened to me,” the source stated, emphasizing that the feast itself might not be the sole cause. “The incident is being thoroughly investigated, and there’s more to it than just the feast, contrary to some reports.”
Several agencies have visited the church for fact-finding missions, though their conclusions have not yet been made public. The church’s leader has been cooperating with investigators and undergoing medical tests to rule out any potential health concerns.
A senior medical official from the IDC, speaking anonymously, confirmed that some of the affected individuals are still receiving care, while others have been discharged. “The state commissioner for health is expected to address the press on this matter in the coming week,” the official added.The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adewale Osifeso, confirmed the incident and assured that investigations are ongoing to uncover the truth behind the unfortunate events.
