Norwich City are helping police with their investigations after a Leeds United supporter was attacked with a knife shortly after their Championship play-off semi-final first leg at Carrow Road.
The fan was understood to have been slashed in the neck area behind the Barclay Stand with claims he’d confronted a group who were taunting the travelling section about two Leeds supporters killed before a European game against Galatasaray 24 years ago.
Two people were arrested following the incident, with Norwich assisting police and studying CCTV and other footage to try identify the culprits.
Though the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the serious incident overshadowed a tense game between two of the divisions heavyweights with the tie nicely-balanced ahead of the second leg at Elland Road on Thursday.
@DorsetHottub posted a picture on Twitter of a man bleeding from a cut on his neck.
A Leeds fan posted this image claiming their father had been ‘slashed’ outside Carrow Road
Two people have reportedly been taken into police custody after the incident
Reports on social media claimed a violent incident had taken place after the full-time whistle, though it is not clear if the arrests are related to the claims
The play-off semi-final first leg ended goalless after Junior Firpo’s first-half strike was ruled out for offside
The tweet included the caption: ‘We came out of Carrow Road after the game to Chants of Turks with knives and Galatasaray.. whilst asking the lads why it was said my dad was slashed in the neck with a blade and hit by a full can…’
Late on Sunday evening, the Canaries in a statement said: ‘Norwich City can confirm that a Leeds United supporter received medical treatment following an incident that occurred outside Carrow Road following Sunday’s Sky Bet Championship play-off fixture.
‘The supporter was seen by paramedics at the scene and did not require further medical treatment.
‘Two individuals were arrested by Norfolk Police in connection with the incident. The club will now work closely with the police to fully investigate the incident, understand the facts and take appropriate action.’
Leeds are often subjected to tragedy chanting referencing two fans that were infamously stabbed to death in Istanbul in 2000 before their UEFA Cup semi-final against Galatasaray.
Daniel Farke‘s side entered Sunday’s clash full of confidence having done the double over the Canaries this season en-route to narrowly missing out on automatic promotion on the final day.
But at the home of his former club the German watched on as his side were held to a goalless draw.
In an ultimately tentative encounter, the visitors looked to have broken the deadlock after half an hour when Junior Firpo had the ball in the net.
However, the Dominican’s would-be opener was controversially ruled out for offside given against Georgino Rutter.
With neither side able to seize the initiative, Thursday’s second-leg at Elland Road is set to determine a place in the play-off final at Wembley later this month.

University of Limerick is seeking Revenue mitigation from interest and any penalties on a â¬1 million tax bill, after buying 20 student homes in the mistaken belief that the deal was exempt from stamp duty.
A confidential report on the affair separately raised questions over post-deal advice from accountants PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), auditors to ULâs governing body. The report by former civil servant Niamh OâDonoghue said PwC did not correct âincompleteâ advice when UL clarified a question on stamp duty, with months passing before the liability became clear.
Stamp duty mistakes compounded problems with the August 2022 housing deal. UL president Prof Kerstin Mey has been on sick leave since March, after acknowledging the university overpaid â¬5.2 million for the homes.
The university paid a â¬1,007,866 stamp duty bill three months ago, after its claim for an exemption on grounds of its charitable status was dismissed.
UL failed to take account of new tax measures in 2021 when the Government imposed stamp duty on the bulk purchase of 10 or more homes, to prevent investment funds buying multiple properties.
A note for the Dáil Public Accounts Committee said the plea for Revenue mitigation was made for Plassey Trust Company (PTC), the campus accommodation provider.
âA submission in relation to mitigating interest and any penalties was made to Revenue by PwC on behalf of PTC on February 23rd, 2024, and a response from Revenue is awaited,â the note said.
Revenue had no comment. UL said it had ânothing to addâ to a hearing last week at the Dáil committee, while PwC did not respond to a request for comment.
It was the stamp duty issue that prompted UL to seek a review of the housing deal from Ms OâDonoghue, former head of the Department of Social Protection. Her report, published in March, said stamp duty was first raised in a February 2022 memo from ULâs solicitor to the chief corporate officer and chief financial and performance officer.
While it was asserted that âstamp duty does not arise for this acquisitionâ because of ULâs charitable status, Ms OâDonoghue said that was not confirmed then or before the deal went for approval.
A note that same day from the director for buildings and estates said UL should seek âspecific adviceâ on stamp duty: âThere is no evidence that the suggestion was followed up at the time.â
The stamp duty issue did not arise again until August 2023 when a âvery short queryâ was raised with PwC seeking confirmation of a charitable status exemption.
âThe response to this query, unfortunately, is incomplete insofar as it did not refer to the removal of the exemption (in 2021) where the acquisition related to 10 or more residential units,â she said.
âThe incomplete nature of the response is somewhat explained because the query raised did not outline the nature of the intended purchase (20 houses). However, when this was clarified later, the advice which had been initially provided was not corrected. This meant that the liability to stamp duty did not become apparent until some months later.â
Chris Gotterup won the inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a four-under 67 for a six-stroke victory at Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
The tournament was played opposite the Wells Fargo Championship, which was won by Rory McIlroy, with Gotterup’s victory securing him a spot in next week’s PGA Championship.
Four strokes ahead entering the round, Gotterup bogeyed the first two holes but rallied superbly with a birdie-eagle-birdie burst on the next three holes at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club in South Carolina.
Four more birdies on the back nine helped the world No.284 clinch victory on his 27th tour start ahead of Alistair Docherty (64) and Davis Thompson (68), who tied for second
“I felt good, like better than I thought I would feel coming out of the gates even though I made two bogeys,” Gotterup said.
“Kind of a crappy putt on the first hole and a really tough two-putt on the next. Then to bounce back the way I did, it’s just kind of how I roll.
“If I’m going to make a bogey, I’m going to get my head screwed back on straight, at least attempt to, and then bounce back.”
“No matter what tournament or what my game feels like, I’m going to grind it out,” Gotterup said. “That’s kind of how I’ve always been.”

But let’s be honest… we all know that big awards shows like this are as much about those surprising and unpredictable moments than anything else.
On that note, for those who missed this year’s ceremony, here are 23 must-see moments from the TV Baftas…
Let’s start on the red carpet, where it’s always a total joy to see Hannah Waddingham
Richard was seen wearing a pin in support of We Are Survivors, a charity who help male survivors of sexual abuse
Hosts Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett kicked things off with a monologue that definitely raised a smile (we particularly enjoyed Romesh reminding the actors in attendance that it’s ‘impossible to fall in love with a script’)
The first winner of the night was Top Boy’s Jasmine Jobson – who clearly wasn’t expecting her win
Hannah Waddingham had us howling with her reaction to losing out in the Best Entertainment Programme category
And Claudia Winkleman wrapped up Strictly Come Dancing’s victory speech brilliantly, with a gag about how she and Tess Daly are ‘in a throuple with Dave Arch’
This led into a dance performance inspired by Peaky Blinders that we don’t think anyone could have seen coming
Mawaan Rizwan’s face suggested he definitely hadn’t anticipated picking up the Best Male Comedy Performance award
And he ended his speech with one of the best lines of the night: ‘Thank you to my therapist. We literally had a conversation this week about how I need to stop relying on external forms of validation. Bad timing!’
Meanwhile, Gbemisola Ikumelo ended her Best Female Comedy Performance speech with an important message about picking up and carrying on after setbacks
Danny Dyer joked that he and Aidan Turner looked ‘like a before and after picture’ when they made an unlikely presenting duo
We absolutely loved Liz Carr joking that her TV habits include watching reruns of herself on Silent Witness
And how great was it to see Ellie Simmonds winning the Best Single Documentary prize?
And after being given the Special Award, Lorraine’s speech summed up everything that’s made her such a TV favourite in the last four decades
Meanwhile, Floella Benjamin’s Bafta Fellowship acceptance speech was equal parts powerful and joyous
Joe Lycett thanked his mum and dad ‘Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII’ as he joked: ‘I lost a bet, hence this. I’m so hot and I need a piss.’
After being caught short without a speech, we loved Timothy Spall telling people to ‘look it all up on IMDB and you’ll see who was involved’
And what better way can there be to end a TV awards show than a speech from Sarah Lancashire?
The sight of Bayern Munich lifting the Bundesliga Meisterschale has been very familiar in recent years.
Eleven titles in a row, the Bavarians have dominated the German top division for more than a decade.
But this year has proven to be very different. Borussia Dortmund, who missed out on toppling them with virtually the last kick last season, have risen from the canvas to reach the Champions League final under Edin Terzic.

Bayern could still finish in third behind Stuttgart, but Bayer Leverkusen have been head and shoulders above the chasing pack.
A corporate-owned club with plastic fans that has bought moderate success over 20 years – that is the unkind stereotype opposition fans have dismissed them as.
But on the pitch, there is nothing but praise for the work Xabi Alonso has done this season, having been appointed manager in October 2022 with the club second from bottom in the Bundesliga with just five points from the opening eight games.
Bayer Leverkusen’s remaining fixtures
Saturday May 18: FC Augsburg (H), Kick-off 2.20pm
Wednesday May 22: Atalanta (N), Kick-off 8pm (Europa League final)
Saturday May 25: Kaiserslautern (N), Kick-off 7pm (DFB-Pokal Cup)
Not long before Alonso’s arrival, Leverkusen had been humiliated in the DFB-Pokal by the third-division side SV Elversberg.
For the club’s sporting director, Simon Rolfes, it was a big show of faith in a man who had previously only worked as the head coach at Real Sociedad’s B team in Spain.

Xabi Alonso says Bayer Leverkusen ‘don’t want to stop’ after keeping their unbeaten record intact with a 1-1 draw with West Ham in the Europa League.
But Alonso’s meteoric rise led to him at one stage becoming the front-runner to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. He has taken a group of players once deemed unremarkable and assembled a title-winning machine.
A two-time Champions League winner with Liverpool and Real Madrid, his transition to become a coach naturally sparked intrigue, but to take a team that was floundering and turn them into Invincibles would rank high among the greatest stories in modern football.

Granit Xhaka heaps praise on head coach Xabi Alonso after he steers the German side Bayer Leverkusen to a very first Bundesliga title.
Leverkusen set a new record among European clubs of 49 successive games unbeaten in all competitions as they secured a late draw with Roma to reach the Europa League final. They extended that to 50 games with a 5-0 win away at Bochum.
So how did Alonso do it? Successful recruitment has played no small part with Victor Boniface, Granit Xhaka, Jonas Hofmann and Alex Grimaldo all acclimatising quickly.
“To prepare for this year, we started thinking about these strategic players in the strategic positions, who could make us and where we could be better,” Alonso said in the autumn.

Bayer Leverkusen are on the verge of achieving what was long considered impossible… ousting champions FC Bayern München from their throne and becoming Bundesliga champions. Here’s how Xabi Alonso has forged a practically perfect team.
Jamie Carragher’s analysis of Alonso’s managerial style earlier this season highlighted the intelligence that is deployed in luring opponents into traps, creating space in the wide areas for the likes of Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong.
Bundesliga sides have had no answer, and then there has been the innate gift of maintaining that intensity until the final whistle.
Even though they were heading through 3-2 on aggregate against Roma on Thursday, Leverkusen were the side pressing at the end, spurred on by the unbeaten record they were so desperate to preserve.
Josip Stanisic’s goal in the seventh minute of stoppage time was the 12th time this season Leverkusen have scored after the 90th minute, with all seven proving decisive.
After yet another comeback, Alonso said: “It’s difficult to explain this kind of situation once and over and over again. I’m kind of speechless again that we were able to come back, to show this character and not to lose the game.
“We have shown great character and the boys kept having the confidence that we were in the right way, even after the 2-0 (for Roma).
“You can have a few doubts, you can lose the control, you try to change a little bit the way you play. But we kept doing the right things.”
Longest unbeaten run across all competitions after the introduction of UEFA club competitions (1955–56)
50 – Bayer Leverkusen (2023–2024 – present)
48 – Benfica (1963–1965)
45 – Dinamo Zagreb (2014–2015)
45 – Rijeka (2016–2017)
44 – Rangers (1992–1993)
43 – Juventus (2011–2012)
42 – Milan (1991–1992)
42 – Ajax (1995–1996)
41 – The New Saints (2023–2024)
Having seen off Bayern to be crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history, Alonso’s side are now heavy favourites to complete an historic unbeaten treble.
Augsburg are the visitors to BayArena next weekend, before Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta provide what looks like the stiffest remaining challenge in the Europa League final in Dublin four days later.
Kaiserslautern, who are 14th in the 2. Bundesliga and still not safe from a relegation play-off, face Leverkusen in the DFB-Pokal Cup in Berlin on May 25.
Atalanta face Juventus in the Coppa Italia final next week, and their defeat of Liverpool earlier in the competition underlines their credentials.
But having broken a record set by an iconic Benfica side that stood for 59 years, Alonso and Leverkusen are close to sporting immortality.

Manchester United vs Arsenal is a match that always, whatever the context, excites even the most-hard-to-please neutral. Most of you will fondly remember the days of Fergie vs Wenger, flying pizzas and title-deciders, the days that, for United fans, increasingly seem distant. Today’s clash only accentuates that state of affairs.
The hosts suffered their latest post-Fergie low on Monday night with a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace. A result that was only beaten by the performance in terms of incompetence and embarrassment. So United come into this match with expectations about as low as they can be. If Arsenal play anywhere near the level they can do, they will win. How often have you been able to say that regards this fixture?
The other bit of context is that the north Londoners need to win to maintain their title charge, anything other than three points today will all but gift the trophy to Manchester City.
So, as per usual, there is a lot riding on the outcome of this fixture, but not in the usual sense for United fans who will be desperate to see their side put in a good performance. Such is the low ebb the club finds itself in that’s all they really ask for today. How times change.
Ahead of the match Erik ten Hag hit out at his many critics saying: “I think the fans have the patience – you’ve seen it on Monday.
“But when I see some comments, they don’t. And either they don’t have any knowledge about football, or they don’t have any knowledge about managing a football team. It’s possible, or they just are up to it.
“But I think there are many people that see the problems and they are patient.”
The United manager can only hope that his side come out swinging just as hard once the referee starts the match this afternoon.
Stay here for all the team news, build up and action with kick-off set for 4.30.
