A policeman responding to the stabbing was shot in the leg with a crossbow.

He was taken to hospital along with the stabbing victim, and has since been discharged.

The stabbing victim suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, cops said.

A 54-year-old man was shot by an armed officer during the incident, suffering “potentially life-changing” injuries.

He has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and taken to hospital under police supervision.

Thames Valley Police has automatically referred itself to the IOPC watchdog over the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Metcalfe said: “We are currently dealing with a serious assault and weapons incident in High Wycombe.

“A man in his sixties suffered a stab wound at an address in School Lane, Downley, at around 6pm yesterday.

“Police officers attended and one was shot in the leg with a crossbow.

“He was taken to hospital but has since been discharged. Our thoughts are with the injured officer.

“We are doing everything to support him and his colleagues, as well as all others affected by the incident within the force.

“The assault victim has also been taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries. Our thoughts are with him as well.

“A 54-year-old man from High Wycombe has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

“He has also been taken to hospital under police supervision with potentially life-changing injuries having been shot by an armed police officer during the incident.

“We are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident at this time.

“There is a large police presence in the area as a result but there is no ongoing threat to the wider public.

“Anyone with concerns should speak to a uniformed police officer.

“A large police cordon is in place so please avoid the area as best you can.

“I’d ask the public to avoid speculating about the incident and sharing footage on social media; instead send it to us via our website.

“We have also made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.”

CMS calls for arena ticket levy and tax relief | IQ Magazine

0

The Culture, Media and Sport (CMS) Committee has backed calls for a new arena and stadium ticket levy, plus tax relief, to safeguard UK’s grassroots music venues (GMVs).

The recommendations feature in a new report from the cross-party committee, which launched the inquiry at the Music Venue Trust’s (MVT) Venues Day in October 2023 and heard about the “cost of touring crisis” facing the sector, against a backdrop of small venues closing at a rate of two per week.

It says that a voluntary levy on arena and stadium concert tickets – as lobbied for by the MVT – would be the most feasible way to have an immediate impact on the business, creating a support fund for venues, artists and promoters, administered by a trust led by a sector umbrella body, and is appealing for the industry to ensure the levy cost is not passed on to music fans. In addition, it is calling for a temporary VAT cut based on venue capacity.

The conclusions have been warmly welcomed by bodies including the MVT, along with trade bodies LIVE (Live music Industry Venues & Entertainment), UK Music, the Music Managers Forum (MMF) and Featured Artists Coalition (FAC).

“These recommendations provide a clear pathway forward to a positive future for the UK’s grassroots music venues, a set of actions that are deliverable, affordable, and will genuinely have a positive impact on live music in communities right across the country,” says MVT CEO Mark Davyd. “We look forward to working with the music industry and with the government to deliver on these recommendations as swiftly as possible.”

Davyd runs Tunbridge Wells Forum in Kent, which recently pledged to become the first venue in the UK to introduce a grassroots ticket levy. Throughout this month, £1 from every ticket sold will be donated to the Music Venue Trust’s (MVT) Pipeline Fund at no additional expense to customers.

The MVT has described 2023 as the most challenging year for the sector since the trust was founded in 2014, as the number of GMVs falling from 960 to 835.

“It’s clear that the committee has recognised the many challenges faced by venues, promoters, events and artists at the grassroots level, and the steps required to address them”

“We would like to thank all the thousands of music fans that have supported our work across the last 10 years,” adds Davyd. “It has taken much longer than any of us would have liked to get the positive change we all wanted to see, but we could not have achieved this fantastic outcome without your continued support for your local live music venue.”

If there is no agreement by September, or if it fails to collect enough income to support the sector, the report says the government should step in an introduce a statutory levy.

“It’s clear that the committee has recognised the many challenges faced by venues, promoters, events and artists at the grassroots level, and the steps required to address them,” says LIVE CEO Jon Collins. “LIVE set out to the committee the actions we believe that the government needs to take to help unleash the economic potential of the sector, such as a reduction in the damaging and uncompetitive rate of VAT on tickets, as well as the actions that sit with us as an industry, notably the creation of a charitable arm, the LIVE Trust.

“We are pleased that the committee’s report addresses both of these matters positively and has entrusted our sector to implement the industry-led solution of a voluntary levy on arena and stadium tickets, gathering and distributing funding that will benefit the whole grassroots music ecosystem. We look forward to working with government on the review of VAT and regularly updating on our progress on the LIVE Trust.”

“Grassroots music venues are a crucial part of the music industry’s ecosystem and have been faced with a series of unprecedented threats for a number of years,” adds UK Music interim chief executive Tom Kiehl. “We welcome the House of Commons CMS Committee taking the opportunity to consider the challenges these venues and the artists that tour in them face.”

Artists and managers previously spoke out in favour of the MVT’s calls for a compulsory £1 levy on tickets sold for UK live music events above 5,000-cap during evidence sessions held in March.

“As the organisations representing artists and managers, we wholeheartedly endorse all the committee’s recommendations,” says a joint statement by FAC CEO David Martin and MMF chief executive Annabella Coldrick. “Most important is their recognition of the ‘cost of touring crisis’, and that the benefits of a ticket levy must flow down to artists, managers, and independent promoters – as well as to grassroots music venues. The entire ecosystem needs support. While we still believe this mechanism should be mandatory, the clock is now ticking to get a process in place before September 2024.”

“The ongoing wave of closures is not just a disaster for music, performers and supporters in local communities up and down the country, but also puts at risk the entire live music ecosystem”

Among the report’s other recommendations are for the government and Arts Council to make it easier for the live music sector to apply for public funding and for stakeholders across the industry to continue to support the FAC’s campaign to end punitive fees on artists’ merchandise.

“We are also delighted to see the committee endorse the 100% Venues campaign, and hope this will trigger action from the UK’s largest live music venues to overhaul outdated practices on merchandise commissions,” continue Martin and Coldrick. “The sale of T-shirts, vinyl and other physical products represent a crucial income stream for artists. It is only fair that they should retain the bulk of that revenue.”

In closing, the report also calls for a comprehensive fan-led review to be set be set up this summer to examine the long-term challenges to the wider live music ecosystem.

“We are grateful to the many dedicated local venues who gave up their time to take part in our inquiry,” says Dame Caroline Dinenage MP, chair of the CMS Committee. “They delivered the message loud and clear that grassroots music venues are in crisis. The ongoing wave of closures is not just a disaster for music, performers and supporters in local communities up and down the country, but also puts at risk the entire live music ecosystem.

“If the grassroots, where musicians, technicians, tour managers and promoters hone their craft, are allowed to wither and die, the UK’s position as a music powerhouse faces a bleak future. To stem the overwhelming ongoing tide of closures, we urgently need a levy on arena and stadium concert tickets to fund financial support for the sector, alongside a VAT cut to help get more shows into venues.

“While the current focus is on the many grassroots music venues falling silent, those working in the live music sector across the board are also under extraordinary strain. It is time that the government brought together everyone with a stake in the industry’s success, including music fans, to address the long-term challenges and ensure live music can thrive into the future.”

Philadelphia homecoming: Ennis prepares for Crowley test | Boxing News

JARON Ennis and Cody Crowley came face-to-face in Philadelphia earlier, ahead of Ennis’s first defence of the full IBF welterweight crown on July 13. It was a spicy affair that threatened to cross the line of decency on more than one occasion.

Speaking at the Wells Fargo Center press conference, the man known colloquially as “Boots” is all set to beautify a positive promotion that started off in a surprisingly negative way.

“I’m gonna put on a beautiful show,” he promised. “I know July 13 is obviously the focus, but beyond that, what is the plan? It’s unification fights. Bringing big fights to the Wells Fargo, right?”

Title challenger Cody Crowley has been linked to Ennis for a while. The Canadian (22-0, 9KOs) is a solid next step. Not that he sees himself as any stepping stone, aiding Ennis’s inevitable rise to glory.

Cody’s delivery was respectful and reserved. His manager, Anthony Girges, was ready for action, however, as things quickly descended into a slanging match. Girges stoked the fires with some mild trash talk.

Chasing down Terence Crawford has become a game for Ennis, whose main aim is to get active and stay active. New promoter Eddie Hearn will help him do that. Adding a touch of pizzazz and hyperbole to a promising tale that has fallen off course lately, mainly due to inactivity and promotional/managerial disputes, is Eddie’s remit.

“The most important thing for me was to bring him home to Philadelphia,” said the Matchroom promoter. “And we made it happen because you have a fighter as special as this, and you have a city as great as this.

“People don’t understand the history of boxing in this city. How has he never fought here [in this arena]? Well, now it’s time for that to change.”

While Ennis has dealt with issues outside of the ropes, challenger Crowley, a softly-spoken southpaw who tried to distance himself from the provocative instigations of his manager, had been out of the ring dealing with various serious matters of his own.

Choosing whether to pursue the WBC, WBO or WBA routes was the least of his worries. Crowley has dealt with a variety of personal circumstances and mental health problems, including the heartbreaking death of his father.

“This is my dream. This is my time,” said an emotional Crowley. “I know this is the big homecoming, but as he said in his Instagram today, I’m going to steal the hearts of Philadelphia.

“It’s a real-life Rocky story. Man, I’ve been through hell and back. I’ve had my entire life taken from me. He has a man in front of him who’s ready to die on July 13th – I’m serious.”

Harsh words, but then again this is a harsh sport. Some of the crowd’s responses to Crowley’s plight were less than complimentary. While father Derrick ‘Bozy’ Ennis, a former pro fighter, was off his seat and ready to rumble, Jaron took it all in his stride. Just as he has his whole career.

“My main focus right now is Cody Crowley, though,” said Jaron Ennis (31-0, 28 KOs). “That’s all my eyes are focused on, him right now. But after this? Definitely undisputed for sure. Collect the rest of the belts and go ahead and move to ‘54 and do the same thing up there.”

Crowley has been running the Rocky steps in anticipation of his big moment, and it would indeed be a real-life Rocky story if he could pull it off against the man Hearn describes as “the future of the sport.” The present-day journey begins on July 13.

State trooper who arrested LGBTQ+ leaders in Philadelphia no longer works for state police

The state trooper who arrested two LGBTQ+ leaders after a contentious traffic stop in Philadelphia is no longer employed by the Pennsylvania state police, officials said Friday.

Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Adam Reed said the trooper, who has not been named, no longer works for the agency, though it’s unclear whether he was fired and when he left the job.

“I can say as of today, he’s no longer employed. I can’t offer any additional information, as we don’t comment on personnel matters,” Reed said.

In March, Celena Morrison and husband Darius McLean were arrested after a traffic stop on an elevated stretch of highway in the city, part of which was captured on video. Morrison heads the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs and McLean runs an LGBTQ+ community center in the city.

The arrests led Mayor Cherelle Parker to weigh in, calling the exchange between the trooper, who appears to be white, and the Black couple “very concerning.”

The Pennsylvania State Troopers Association criticized the state police for not standing behind the trooper.

“This decision is reprehensible,” Union President Stephen Polishan said in an statement. “This young trooper, on the job for only six months, deserved better from our department.”

Lawyer Kevin Mincey, who represents the couple, declined to comment. He is preparing to file a suit against the state police and the trooper on their behalf.

The couple were detained for about 12 hours after the 9 a.m. March 2 traffic stop in which they were driving separately to take a car for repairs when a trooper pulled Morrison over after maneuvering himself between their two vehicles, according to their lawyer.

Morrison took a video on her cellphone of the trooper handcuffing McLean after he stopped his car behind the trooper. In the video, McLean is lying in the rain on the shoulder of the highway. The trooper knocked the cellphone from her hand, ending the recording, Morrison’s lawyer’s have said.

The couple’s lawyers have also questioned the reason for the stop, saying the trooper would not have had time to run the registration before he wedged between them and pulled Morrison over. The trooper, on the video, said he stopped her for tailgating and failing to have her lights on.

“I don’t know why he’s doing this,” McLean cries to his wife as she recorded him being handcuffed.

“It’s ’cause I’m Black,” McLean says.

“It’s not ’cause you’re Black,” replies the trooper, who leaves McLean handcuffed on the highway shoulder and then moves to arrest Morrison.

WRC – Rovanperä swoops to Friday lead in Rally de Portugal thriller | EN.WHEELZ.ME

0

Finn heads Toyota podium lockout as top four blanketed by just 5.4sec.

Kalle Rovanperä overcame a challenging Friday to lead a frenzied see-saw battle for the Vodafone Rally de Portugal top spot.

The Toyota-driving Finn topped the fifth round of the 2024 FIA World Rally Championship by a mere 1.0sec from team-mate Sébastien Ogier on a day marked by five different stage winners, resulting in the top four crews being separated by just 5.4sec.

Rovanperä initially languished in fifth overall after a lacklustre opener but posted top-three times in the remaining seven tests, confidently climbing the standings despite reporting excessive understeer in his GR Yaris.

He seized the lead after overtaking early pacesetter Takamoto Katsuta on the afternoon’s second test at Lousã and went fastest on the penultimate stage at Arganil, but Ogier’s blistering run through the Mortágua finale narrowed the gap and intensified the pressure.

“It has been a great battle the whole day,” admitted Rovanperä “I could not do much more [in the last one] because my tyres were in such bad condition at the rear and it was just about surviving.

“[The battle] is only fun if you are winning, so let’s see!”

Tyre management played a crucial role. Pirelli’s soft compound rubber was favoured for this morning’s sandy surfaces, while hard tyres came into play in the afternoon when the repeated stages were rougher and temperatures higher.

Ogier’s late surge propelled him from fourth to second overall. He could have potentially led overnight were it not for an intercom failure during SS5 and a loss of hybrid power on SS8.

Katsuta lived up to his promise to push hard from the outset, clinching the Mortágua 1 stage win as well as setting top-three times on both runs of Arganil. He was happy to bring up the rear of a Toyota 1-2-3 overnight despite falling 3.7sec behind Ogier, while Ott Tänak completed the day just 0.7sec further back in fourth after admitting to a “not nice” feeling behind the wheel of his Hyundai i20 N.

Although Toyota enjoyed a successful day, misfortune befell title-hunting GR Yaris driver Elfyn Evans, whose co-driver Scott Martin resorted to using his mobile phone to access a digital copy of their pace notes after misplacing the physical book before SS7. Their frustrations were compounded by a tyre being pushed off the wheel rim in the same stage, costing the British pair almost a minute.

That turn of events was a boon for championship leader Thierry Neuville, who headed Evans by six points before this round.

Despite facing the challenge of opening the road and sweeping a cleaner and faster line for those running behind, Neuville managed to stay in touch with the leaders and ended 0.2sec behind his Hyundai colleague Dani Sordo in sixth. Sordo lost hybrid power for SS5 but still managed to win three of the day’s eight stages.

M-Sport Ford Puma hotshot Adrien Fourmaux headed Evans on his return to the Matosinhos service park while Grégoire Munster and WRC2 leader Oliver Solberg completed the top 10.

Saturday hosts the longest leg of the rally, with 145km of action packed into two loops of four stages before the Lousada super special stage concludes the day.

Leading positions after Friday:
1. K Rovanerä / J Halttunen FIN Toyota GR Yaris 1h 25m 0.4s
2. S Ogier / V Landais FRA Toyota GR Yaris +1.0s
3. T Katsuta / A Johnston Toyota GR Yaris JPN +4.7s
4. O Tänak / M Järveoja EST Hyundai i20 N +5.4s
5. D Sordo C Carrera ESP Hyundai i20 N +17.9
6. T Neuville / M Wydaeghe BEL Hyundai i20 N +18.1

Small Black Arrows release Trojan Horse…

0

Small Black Arrows

Small Black Arrows are the next big thing. Let me hark around the streets of Manchester! You’ve heard it here first. This next instalment is a hip hop soul banger that doesn’t drag and hits home hard with sassy vocals, a trip hop beat and a formula that will make you remember where you heard this first! Their debut album hits the streets on the 31st May and will get you. Trust me…

SMALL BLACK ARROWS RELEASE NEW SINGLE TROJAN HORSE. Following on from the successful digital release of the title track from their forthcoming debut LP, THE BRITISH MUSEUM which reached #12 in the iTunesalt singles chart, this is the second single from the album, leading to its release later in the month.Trojan Horse is a deceptively simple earworm, with an irresistible killer bass riff leading you into a tale of new love and its complications.

Luke Bailey says: “On the surface, Trojan Horse is a fun and funky driving number with rock and electro-pop overtones. Lyrically it charts those turbulent throes of new love, although we explore it through the lens of one man’s fragile ego. He’s emotionally generous to begin with, but small indiscretions feel like betrayals to him. The narrative then examines how he intellectualises these perceived attacks and his attempts to rebalance equilibrium. Musically we’ve teased his psychological maze, with cyclical notions and a thriller feel (the film genre not the Michael Jackson song). We’ve subverted the more traditional love-pop design with a sinister rolling bed and infused the melody with some unsettling harmonies to kind of challenge the ear a little and express the darker nature of music’s much lauded emotion”.

THE FORTHCOMING ALBUM: The British Museum LP hits the streets on the 31st May on Vinyl, CD and all digital formats, with a further single out close to the album, to support the release. The album is an immersive, multi-layered masterpiece that takes you on an urgent joyride through modern Britain, combining the bands eclectic experimental pop with virtual “exhibits”. Hauntingly melodic, Small Black Arrows offer a cautionary examination of love, mental illness, and political manipulation, through one App’s perspective of the impending AI revolution.
