Kentucky sheriff held over fatal shooting of judge in court

0

A Kentucky sheriff has been arrested after fatally shooting a judge in his chambers, police say.

District Judge Kevin Mullins died at the scene after being shot multiple times in the Letcher County Courthouse, Kentucky State Police said.

Letcher County Sheriff Shawn Stines, 43, has been charged with one count of first-degree murder.

The shooting happened on Thursday after an argument inside the court, police said, but they have not yet revealed a motive.

Officials said Mullins, 54, was shot multiple times at around 14:00 local time on Thursday at the court in Whitesburg, Kentucky, a small rural town about 150 miles (240km) south-east of Lexington.

Sheriff Stines was arrested at the scene without incident, Kentucky State Police said. They did not reveal the nature of the argument before the shooting.

According to local newspaper the Mountain Eagle, Sheriff Stines walked into the judge’s outer office and told court employees that he needed to speak alone with Mullins.

The two entered the judge’s chambers, closing the door behind them. Those outside heard gun shots, the newspaper reported.

Sheriff Stines reportedly walked out with his hands up and surrendered to police. He was handcuffed in the courthouse foyer.

The state attorney general, Russell Coleman, said in a post on X, formerly Twitter, that his office “will fully investigate and pursue justice”.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Matt Gayheart told a news conference that the town was shocked by the incident

“This community is small in nature, and we’re all shook,” he said.

Mr Gayheart said that 50 employees were inside the court building when the shooting occurred.

No-one else was hurt. A school in the area was briefly placed on lockdown.

Kentucky Supreme Court Chief Justice Laurance B VanMeter said he was “shocked by this act of violence”.

Announcing Judge Mullins’ death on social media, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said: “There is far too much violence in this world, and I pray there is a path to a better tomorrow.”

Harris labeled ‘tough enough’ by more voters than Trump ahead of Oprah event: Live

Joe Rogan heaps praise on Kamala Harris debate against Trump

Your support helps us to tell the story

My recent work focusing on Latino voters in Arizona has shown me how crucial independent journalism is in giving voice to underrepresented communities.

Your support is what allows us to tell these stories, bringing attention to the issues that are often overlooked. Without your contributions, these voices might not be heard.

Every dollar you give helps us continue to shine a light on these critical issues in the run up to the election and beyond

Kamala Harris will be joined by Oprah Winfrey on Thursday evening in Michigan for a major campaign fundraiser with an expected 200,000 people joining online as well as an in-studio audience.

The “Unite for America” live stream event starts at 8pm ET.

Meanwhile, the latest AP/NORC poll shows Harris pulling ahead of Donald Trump as the candidate of whom voters have a more positive view.

Specifically, the vice president scores higher on where she is “tough enough to be president”, “would change the country for the better”, and “would fight for people like you”.

The former president meanwhile scores highest on “will say anything to win the election”.

Trump delivered his latest rally in Uniondale on Long Island, New York, on Wednesday, pledging to “bring back religion” to thank God for saving his life, and asking New Yorkers to vote for him by saying: “What the hell do you have to lose?”

The Republican nominee also pledged to visit Springfield, Ohio, after he and running mate JD Vance spread a bogus story about Haitian immigrants stealing and eating residents’ pets, inspiring a spate of bomb threats.

Khalil Thompson, the founder of “Win With Black Men,” said on Thursday night that “brothers, men who are watching this and enjoying this moment, you have a choice. I choose experience and fortitude over something else. I come from a litany of amazing Black women.”

“We have a chance to do a performance review and give a promotion to the best-qualified candidate to be president United States,” he added.

Hunter Biden’s federeal firearms sentencing delayed until December

Hunter Biden will be sentenced on felony firearms charges in December after the judge agreed Thursday to a delay requested by the defense.

In June, President Joe Biden ‘s son was convicted in Delaware federal court of three felonies for purchasing a gun in 2018 when, prosecutors said, he lied on a federal form by claiming he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

He was initially scheduled to be sentenced on November 13, but the judge agreed to delay the hearing until December 4 after Hunter Biden’s lawyers said they needed more time to adequately prepare.

Trump can start selling his nearly $2bn worth of shares in his media company… But will he?

The GOP nominee and other large shareholders in Trump Media & Tech Group were released at 4pm on Thursday from a lockup agreement that barred them from selling their stock for six months after it was offered. The agreement has been in place since March, when the company went public following a merger, so long as shares traded at $12 or above, Forbes reported.

Rwanda begins vaccinations against mpox amid a call for more doses for Africa

Your support helps us to tell the story

As your White House correspondent, I ask the tough questions and seek the answers that matter.

Your support enables me to be in the room, pressing for transparency and accountability. Without your contributions, we wouldn’t have the resources to challenge those in power.

Your donation makes it possible for us to keep doing this important work, keeping you informed every step of the way to the November election

Andrew Feinberg

White House Correspondent

Rwanda has started a vaccination campaign against mpox with 1,000 doses of the vaccine it obtained from Nigeria under an agreement between the two countries, the African health agency said Thursday.

The vaccinations started Tuesday targeting seven districts with “high risk populations” who neighbor Congo, Dr. Nicaise Ndembi from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said. Nigeria donated the 1,000 doses to Rwanda from an allotment of 10,000 it had received from the United States.

Congo has been at t he epicenter of an outbreak on the African continent, where 2,912 new mpox cases and 14 new deaths have been recorded in the last one week, bringing the total number of cases to 6,105 with 738 deaths since the beginning of the year.

“This outbreak must be stopped very quickly,” Africa CDC director-general Dr. Jean Kaseya said Thursday.

Rwanda and other countries are now requesting more doses than they originally indicated that they needed, Kaseya said. African experts have estimated the continent might need about 10 million vaccines to stop the ongoing outbreaks.

The Japanese government has signed an agreement with the government in Congo to provide 3 million doses of the mpox vaccine.

The World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday urged more countries to contribute to the response.

“International collaboration and support are needed to stop the spread of the virus,” he wrote on X social media platform.

Congo is expected to start its vaccination campaign in the first week of October. Some 165,000 doses have so far been delivered to Congo, with hundreds of thousands more pledged by European countries.

“We also need this vaccine to start to be manufactured in Africa, and we are working strongly and closely with our manufacturers and also our partners to have these vaccines manufactured from one of the African countries,” Kaseya said.

WHO said Friday it had granted its first authorization for use of a vaccine against mpox in adults, calling it an important step toward fighting the disease in Africa.

The approval of the vaccine made by Bavarian Nordic A/S means that donors like vaccines alliance Gavi and UNICEF can buy it. But supplies are limited because there’s only a single manufacturer.

‘I feel there is real purpose to the work that I do’

Tell us about yourself, where you’re from and what you studied in college

I’m Aynsley and I’m currently working as a consulting analyst at Deloitte Ireland. I am based in the Dublin office and I’m now in my second year of the graduate programme. I did the Bachelor of Commerce (International) in UCD.

How did you find out about the graduate programme?

I learned about the graduate programme through employees who generously shared their experiences at the firm with me. I spoke with a few associates at the career fair on campus for final-year students. They had also studied at UCD, so I felt like they understood my questions, having once stood in my shoes.

I felt really connected with them and was drawn to the culture from those initial conversations. Over the various stages of the interview process, I learned about the graduate programme through the people I met, as they shared their personal experiences with me. The brand itself and the span of Irish and global companies that they work with was also really appealing.

What is the graduate programme like?

What I love most is the people. Whether working in the office or from home, I always feel supported by my team. Joining the programme with 100 other graduates made settling in quite easy, and I’ve had numerous opportunities to connect socially with colleagues through coffee mornings and team events. These interactions have helped me build a network that will be invaluable as I progress in my career.

Explain what the work experience is like as a graduate

The experience I am gaining as a graduate has been extremely valuable as I have had the opportunity to work very closely with one of our clients, gaining insight into their organisation and the services they provide.

As a business analyst working with the Family Law Reform team, I have found the experience to be truly rewarding. We apply a user-centred, service design approach to all of our work. This means we place the user at the heart of everything we do, tailoring solutions to meet their needs.

I feel there is real purpose to the work that I do and that I am constantly learning from the team around me.

What do you plan to work as after the programme and why?

I plan to progress through the academy to further develop my leadership skills and deepen my industry knowledge. I value the mentorship and diverse expertise, which has been instrumental in my growth, and I look forward to building on that foundation.

There are lots of opportunities inside the company for me to progress to more senior levels relatively quickly, so my goal is to continue on the management track, honing my ability to lead teams and manage projects effectively. Additionally, I’m eager to explore opportunities to work abroad.

What’s your advice to graduates applying to the programme?

It’s so important to select the right programme for you, so ask lots of questions. Look to understand what sets the company apart and how it aligns with your own career aspirations. Take the time to reflect on what excites you about the role and the impact you want to make.

‘We were promised better!’ Starmer savaged on BBC QT for free gifts ‘hypocrisy’

0

Sir Keir Starmer was ripped apart on BBC Question Time by a Conservative MP and former minister for his “hypocrisy” in accepting lavish freebies.

Graham Stuart said the Labour leader was “more pious than the Pope” when in opposition, citing how Sir Keir repeatedly mocked Boris Johnson over donations of wallpaper for redecorating Downing Street.

But the MP for Beverley and Holderness suggested the Prime Minister behaved no better when accepting free gifts of clothing and multiple pairs of glasses worth thousands of pounds from Lord Waheed Alli, a prominent Labour donor.

Sir Keir has denied being the “king of the freebies” after receiving more than £100,000 worth of gifts and donations – more than any other MP and twice the amount of Lucy Powell, the Leader of the House of Commons, who was in second place.

The PM, a keen Arsenal fan, accepted more than £35,000 of free football tickets over the last parliament, alongside other offers of hospitality.

Sir Keir is now facing a standards investigation after failing to declare more than £5,000 of high-end items for his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer.

Mr Stuart said: “Forget the tickets, forget the frocks, forget the spectacles, the suits, and the access for Lord Alli, what really gets in people’s craw … is the hypocrisy.

“Millions of people voted Labour because they did buy that we needed a cleaner politics. They wanted greater propriety. They wanted transparency.

“Instead they have a man who was more pious than the Pope when he was in opposition, and now we’ve gone from pious Keir to graspy Keir.”

Question Time host Fiona Bruce pointed out that Mr Johnson declared donations well over Sir Keir’s level.

Mr Stuart responded by saying: “The public were promised that things would be better.

“Starmer actually said that we need to ensure that people cannot use their office in order to get benefits and open the door to vested interests.”

On the same show, Sir Keir was ridiculed by fellow panellist and columnist Jill Kirby, who claimed Lord Alli “was clearly buying influence” with his donations.

She added: “Keir Starmer does not need to have his clothes bought for him – he should have gone to Specsavers like everyone else.”

Labour grandee and former deputy leader Harriet Harman urged Sir Keir to “deal with the criticism” and admit that such donations were not acceptable.

She said “doubling down” and trying to “justify” the freebies was angering and alienating voters.

How Can Automation Bring A Transformative Change In HR Processes

0

The human resource industry has ushered in automation in its processes, which can lead to greater efficiency and fewer delays. HR can now devote more time to human-centric tasks as automation takes care of the rest.

Here, we will look at how companies can achieve greater efficiency through HR automation.

Recruitment

Automation can help recruiters post on job boards while ensuring new hires have all the required information. Creating a separate offer letter for every new joiner is another time-consuming aspect that can be automated easily. When a company decides to automate unproductive admin tasks, its HR can allocate its time and resources to more deserving avenues.

Onboarding

Most of the manual work is done in the onboarding process, increasing the chances of human errors. Automation can be introduced for tasks like checking if the employment contracts have been prepared and remitted, setting up training schedules, document verification, providing new hires with tool access, signing forms, raising device requests, etc. HR automation offers management a simple flowchart to refer to and cross-check during onboarding. This includes creating approval workflows, sending automatic notifications, generating official PDF documents, and more.

Training

Employees at every level usually undergo mandatory training every year. You can automate your HR processes with Lucca and assign the course to all the employees without the manual intervention of company HR. The employees can be enrolled in the organization’s Learning Management System to receive new training modules and reminders for timely completion.

Performance Management

Automation can help with correct decision-making regarding performance-related goals while removing bias. This gives managers the proper feedback, which they can refer to while delivering employee feedback during annual review meetings. Data collection and compilation are extremely time-consuming activities. Giving managers access to an automated Performance Management System can help them get one-click employee feedback. Even employees can benefit from automated performance management as these tools serve as a database for storing all work-related records, including recognitions, milestones, and more. They can refer to the same and present it to their managers during the review meetings.

Offboarding

When an employee decides to resign from the job, the HR undertakes an offboarding process. With the help of automation, HR can ensure that the employee holds all the necessary documents regarding their benefits, final pay, and the like during offboarding. This helps establish a positive exit experience for the employee. Though the offboarding process is often overlooked, it can impact the company’s goodwill if tackled correctly. Automation can help reduce the time taken and errors committed by employees while protecting the company from a security and compliance standpoint.

Conclusion

HR plays a significant role in shaping an organization’s success. It oversees the recruitment, training, onboarding, and offboarding processes. A company cannot run smoothly without an effective HR department. However, numerous HRs complain of towering paperwork and administration work requiring manual processing. If you wish to save time and maximize productivity, it’s best to try out automating HR functions.

Deliveroo releases 99p burger for uni students on Freshers' week

0

WITH Freshers’ week about to begin, Deliveroo has served up a treat for uni students.

The food delivery service has released 99p burgers to fuel hungry uni students like never before.

1

Love Island legend and ex-University of Liverpool grad Chloe Burrows kicked off the 99b burger week

Featuring a lean beef burger patty, kimchi, cheddar cheese, gochujang cabbage and carrot slaw and curly spring onions sandwiched between a sweet potato bun.

The Boost Burger has been designed to help uni students get through their first week.

The Boost Burger aims to fuel the half of the uni students who are worried about not having enough energy for Fresher’s Week, with late nights spent socialising followed by early-morning lectures.

The cheap burger comes at the perfect time with two in five uni students admitting that a takeaway is their go-to way to cheer themselves up when feeling run down.

The burger has been created in collaboration with registered nutritionist Jenna Hope.

Jenna helped develop the recipe, which incorporates healthy and nutritional ingredients, selected with busy uni students in mind.

The creation is packed with nutritional ingredients including protein to support energy requirements.

It also contains vegetables and spices like chia seeds picked for texture and nutty flavour, red and white cabbage, spring onion, and pumpkin powder for an added crunch.

Fermented ingredients such as kimchi and Korean gochujang give this must-have a satisfying ‘spicy’ flavour.

Arabella Jenkins from Deliveroo said: “What better way to kick off Fresher’s than to announce that our university student club, Deliveroo Students, is back with a bang.

“To celebrate, we’re dropping a 99p ‘Boost Burger’ packed full of nutrients to help fuel student members across the UK – the ultimate saver meal for uni students in more ways than one.

“We hope this is great news for fresher’s as our research reveals around a third of uni students don’t have time to cook meals during Fresher’s Week.

“More than a quarter of students admitting they don’t eat enough fruit and veg in the first week of uni, while a further quarter say they tend to feel tired after week one.”

COMPARING BASKETS

Shoppers are increasingly using delivery apps to order groceries from supermarkets.

The number of people turning to Uber Eats to get their shopping from stores such as Sainsbury’sCo-Op and Waitrose has nearly doubled over the last two years.

Many find it quicker and easier than ordering online directly with supermarkets as there is no need to book a delivery slot and the groceries usually arrive within an hour.

But apps often charge delivery and service fees, and supermarkets are also hiking the prices of their products if you order them this way.

Overall, shoppers are paying around a quarter more — up to around £7.42 extra per basket — for exactly the same goods if ordered through a delivery app.

Love Island legend and ex-University of Liverpool grad Chloe Burrows kicked off festivities this week by hand-delivering the first batch of Boost Burgers to hungry uni students in London.

She said: “I wish I had the Boost Burger when I was at university.

“It’ll come as no surprise that I was the queen of burning the candle at both ends, so it would’ve really come in handy during my time at the University of Liverpool.”

Members of Deliveroo Students can also get free delivery on orders over £15 and access to exclusive Fresher’s Week restaurant offers.

That includes 10 per cent off at Wingstop, 20 per cent off at Co-op select student favourites, and 15 per cent off at National Express all year long.

The limited-edition ‘Boost Burger’ is available via Deliveroo in London from September 17, Bristol from September 19, Manchester from September 21, and Edinburgh from September 23 while limited stocks last.

How to save on your supermarket shop

THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.

You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.

If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.

Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund

How to Create Social Media Content to Get New Followers on Instagram

0

In the competitive world of Instagram, gaining new followers requires more than just posting pretty pictures.

It’s about creating content that resonates with your audience, stands out, and encourages people to hit that “Follow” button. While the quality of your content plays a crucial role, understanding the platform’s algorithms, trends, and audience behavior is essential to boost your follower count. Let’s dive into some expert strategies to help you create social media content that not only captures attention but also attracts more Instagram followers.

Understand Your Audience Before You Post

One of the biggest mistakes people make on Instagram is posting content without fully understanding their audience. Before you create a single post, take some time to analyze who your target audience is. Are they young adults interested in fashion, professionals seeking productivity tips, or foodies on the hunt for the latest culinary trends?

Understanding your audience allows you to craft content that appeals directly to their interests, needs, and desires. The more relevant and tailored your posts are, the more likely your audience will engage and, most importantly, follow your account.

Use Instagram’s built-in analytics tools (Instagram Insights) to analyze your existing followers, check when they are most active, and see which posts resonate the most. Once you have a clear picture of your audience, you can align your content to their preferences, making it much easier to attract new followers who share similar interests.

Create Visually Engaging Content

Instagram is a visual platform, and in order to grow your followers, your content needs to stand out visually. High-quality images and videos are non-negotiable. Whether you’re using professional photography or your smartphone, ensure that your visuals are crisp, vibrant, and compelling.

Here are a few tips for creating visually engaging content:

  • Stick to a theme: Use consistent colors, tones, and styles in your posts to create a cohesive look for your profile.
  • Utilize Reels and Stories: These short-form video formats are becoming increasingly popular and offer a dynamic way to showcase your content.
  • Post high-quality images: Ensure that your photos and videos are clear, properly lit, and appealing to the eye. Bright, well-composed images will always grab more attention than dark or blurry ones.

A strong aesthetic gives your Instagram profile a professional and polished feel, which can be a key factor in convincing potential followers to stay on your page and hit that “Follow” button.

Consider Buying Followers to Jumpstart Growth

While organic growth is always preferred, there’s no denying that buying followers can provide a quick boost, particularly for accounts that are just starting out. When done correctly, buying Instagram followers can make your account appear more established and credible, helping you attract organic followers more easily.

But it’s crucial to approach this strategy wisely. Make sure to buy followers from reputable services that offer real accounts, as fake followers can harm your engagement rates and may even get your account penalized.

A sudden increase in followers can also create a snowball effect. When potential followers see a high follower count, they are more likely to trust and follow your account. However, keep in mind that buying followers is just one piece of the puzzle; you’ll still need to consistently produce quality content and engage with your audience to maintain and grow your follower base.

If you’re considering this approach, take the time to research services and ensure you are getting value for your investment. Once your follower count gets a boost, focus on creating meaningful content and use strategies like more Instagram followers through organic growth techniques to sustain your momentum.

Harness the Power of Hashtags

Hashtags are a powerful tool to expand the reach of your Instagram posts. They help your content become discoverable to users who don’t already follow you. In 2023, Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post, but the focus should be on quality rather than quantity.

Here’s how to effectively use hashtags:

  • Mix popular and niche hashtags: Popular hashtags like #love or #instagood have high visibility but also high competition. Combine these with more niche-specific hashtags that directly target your audience. For instance, if you’re a fitness coach, use hashtags like #fitlifestyle or #workouttips.
  • Follow trending hashtags: Keep an eye on trending hashtags and incorporate them into your content when relevant. This helps you tap into larger conversations and increases your chances of getting noticed by new followers.
  • Create branded hashtags: Developing a unique hashtag for your brand encourages followers to engage with your content and can help build a community around your profile.

By using hashtags strategically, you not only make your content more discoverable but also attract followers who are genuinely interested in your niche.

Engage With Your Audience

Engagement is the key to growing your follower count organically. When users see that you are actively engaging with your audience, they are more likely to feel connected to your content and your brand. This can be as simple as responding to comments, liking other people’s posts, and even initiating conversations.

  • Reply to comments: When someone takes the time to comment on your post, acknowledge them. Whether it’s with a simple “thank you” or a thoughtful response, this kind of interaction builds community and encourages others to engage.
  • Run interactive polls and quizzes in Stories: Instagram Stories offer great features like polls, quizzes, and questions. These interactive elements encourage your followers to participate and can spark conversations, leading to more engagement and exposure.
  • Collaborate with other accounts: One effective way to grow your audience is through collaborations with influencers or brands in your niche. This exposes your content to a broader audience, many of whom might become followers.

Active engagement shows potential followers that your account is lively and that you value interaction, making it more attractive for them to follow.

Conclusion

Creating social media content that attracts new followers on Instagram requires a combination of creativity, consistency, and strategy. From crafting visually stunning posts to leveraging hashtags and engaging with your audience, each step plays a role in building a loyal follower base. And while organic growth is always valuable, tools like buying followers can help jumpstart your account’s visibility.

By following these steps, you’ll not only grow your Instagram followers but also build a stronger, more engaged community around your content. In the ever-competitive Instagram landscape, staying authentic and engaging will always be the most effective strategy for success.
