Catherine O’Hara has died at the age of 71, with tributes pouring in for the Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek star after her sad death
Tributes have flooded in for Catherine O’Hara following her death at the age of 71. The Home Alone star – best known for playing Kevin’s mum in the hit festive film – has sadly died, it has been announced.
The actress – who also starred as Moira Rose in sitcom Schitt’s Creek – died at her home in Los Angeles “following a brief illness”, according to a statement from her agency, CAA. Catherine had had some iconic roles throughout her working life, including in Beetlejuice – the 1980s original and the 2024 reboot – as well as another Tim Burton film, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Tributes have poured in for Catherine from stars of both the big and little screen, including actor Justin Theroux – who also starred in Beetlejuice. He wrote: “Catherine, you will be so missed.”
Alex Baldwin’s wife Hilaria Baldwin also posted a story tribute to Catherine. Pedro Pascal, who appeared alongside Catherine in The Last of Us, added in his own post: “Oh, genius to be near you. Eternally grateful. There is less light in my world; this lucky world that had you will keep you always. Always.”
Actress Rita Wilson wrote: “Catherine O’Hara – a woman who was authentic and truthful in all she did. You saw it in her work, if you knew her you saw it in her life, and you saw it in her family. Bo, Luke and Matthew, our deepest sympathies. May Catherine rest in peace. May her memory be eternal.”
Ron Howard shared: “This is shattering news. What a wonderful person, artist and collaborator. I was lucky enough to direct, produce and act in projects with her and she was simply growing more brilliant with each year. My heart goes out to Bo & family.”
The SAG-AFTRA also paid tribute to Catherine in a statement, sharing: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Catherine O’Hara. A beloved actor and comedian, Catherine was a two-time SAG-AFTRA Actor Award winner for her unforgettable work on ‘Schitt’s Creek.’ She’s currently a nominee for ‘The Studio.’ From comedy to drama, her brilliance, generosity and originality has left an indelible mark on film and television. We honour her extraordinary legacy and extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and legions of fans.”
Fans paid tribute to Catherine too, with one sharing: “RIP Catherine O’ Hara. I know John Candy greeted her with open arms.” Another wrote: “Catherine O’Hara was an absolute genius for the entirety of her career. She will be terribly missed.”
A second added: “Catherine O’Hara will be remembered most as the mom in the first two Home Alone movies. But I’ll always remember her as Delia Deetz in BeetleJuice. RIP to a legend.” She is survived by her husband – Bo Welch – and her two sons, Matthew and Luke.
