Cyber Security Week 2025: IGP Warns Citizens Against Dangers Of Cybercrime | Independent Newspaper Nigeria

……As NPF-NCC Boss Urges Cyber Vigilance

As rest of the world celebrates Cybersecurity Week 2025, aimed at creating awareness against cybercrime, the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun has warned Nigerians against the dangers of cybercrime.

The IGP who was represented at the Cybersecurity Awareness Campaign, organized by the NPF -NCCC in Abuja on Saturday by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), DIG Sadiq Idris Abubakar, said the centre can help build a cyber-ready nation where technology serves as a tool for progress, not a weapon in the hands of criminals.

The awareness campaign is a global event which is organized across the world to sensitize citizens more about cybercrimes and how to avoid falling victims.

The IGP noted that as cyber criminals are coming up with new tricks, the Police is changing its tactics to be ahead of them, adding that this is already yielding results.

This is as he commended partner agencies and other security outfits whose personnel trooped out to join in the awareness campaign and walk including the UK National Cyber Security Agency, the EFCC, ICPC, UNODC, Nigeria Immigration Service, National Identity Management Agency among others.

The NPF-NCCC’s one-day Cybercrime Awareness Campaign with walking exercise began and ended at Unity Fountain, FCT Abuja.

The Director of the NPF-NCCC, CP Ifeanyi Henry Uche disclosed that the walk and awareness campaign seeks to bring to the knowledge of Nigerians, the reality of internet fraud and cyber criminality and the need to be cyber hygienic.

CP warned against giving out personal, family and business information to anybody, saying, “You don’t need to give anybody any information about your transactions or bank details among others. The bank already have your details and will not call you for them.

“For instance, if you are being asked to give your nude picture over phantom benefits, it is a red flag. There is also increase in identity theft. We have to be aware of our internet environment as well as guard it jealously.

“The Inspector General of Police is so passionate about tackling this menace and to fight cyber crimes head on, that is why he created the NPF- NCCC and is supporting the Centre.”

He commended partners like the UK National Cybercrime Agency, the UNODC, the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies for their continued collaboration in the fight against cyber criminality.

Mr. Chris Grimson of the UK NCA in his remarks said the British agency was participating in the campaign to support Nigeria because cybercrime threat is a global problem which can only be successfully tackled with collaboration.

Also, the Comptroller General (CG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nanna Nandap, said the event reflects the shared commitment of security agencies to foster a culture of cyber vigilance, collaboration and public awareness.

Represented by the Controller of ICT Governance at NIS Headquarters, CIS MM Maradun, the CG stressed that inter-agency collaboration in cybersecurity demands the deliberate and strategic sharing of information, resources and expertise to achieve a common goal.
