Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has invoked the “No Work, No Pay” policy in response to the recent warning strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD).
NARD initiated a nationwide seven-day warning strike starting Monday, citing the continued detention of one of its members, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola-Olawale, as a primary concern.
In a statement released Thursday by ministry spokesperson Ado Bako, the ministry expressed disappointment with NARD’s decision to strike, noting that the action disregarded ongoing negotiations and the government’s efforts to maintain industrial harmony.
The ministry emphasized that while it acknowledges the legitimate concerns of medical professionals, it considers continued dialogue the best way to address these issues. As a result, the Federal Government will enforce the “No Work, No Pay” policy for the strike days, aiming to minimize disruptions to essential healthcare services.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to the safety, welfare, and working conditions of all healthcare workers, including resident doctors, noting that significant progress had been made in recent negotiations. It highlighted ongoing efforts, in collaboration with security agencies, to secure the safe release of Dr. Popoola.
The ministry urged NARD to return to the negotiation table, stressing the importance of finding lasting solutions to the challenges in the healthcare sector through constructive dialogue.
