Police are searching for answers after a ‘popular’ British couple living in France were found dead in a villa.

Thought to be a burglary gone wrong, the unnamed couple in their 60s had been living in the small town of Les Pesquiès for more than a decade.

French authorities found two bodies yesterday after a neighbour rang the home and didn’t receive an answer.

A source near the investigation said: ‘The house is very isolated, close to thick woods, and it may have been targeted. A neighbour who goes on long walks with the couple discovered the bodies when he called round to see them. He is currently speaking to detectives.’

According to initial reports, prosecutors aren’t ruling out ‘any theory’.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office previously told MailOnline: ‘We are supporting the family of a British couple who died in France and are liaising with the Local Authorities.’
