Wood wants Cacace fight with or without world title | Boxing News

LEIGH WOOD wants to fight Anthony Cacace whether the Northern Irishman’s world title is on the line or not.

Cacace currently holds the IBF super-featherweight strap but must next fight mandatory challenger Eduardo Nunez if he wants to hold on to his title. Last time out Cacace defeated Josh Warrington on points at Wembley Stadium in a non-title bout after the International Boxing Federation refused to sanction the ‘Leeds Warrior’ as a challenger.

Cacace vs. Nunez must take place by March 20, 2025. Should it not then Cacace will be stripped.

During an interview with Wood Boxing News asked the 36-year-old if a fight against ‘The Apache’ would still be of interest should he vacate the world title.

“It’s the fight. It’s the biggest fight, I think,” he answered.

“Nunez hasn’t really beat anyone that anyone knows yet. It’s not really a name. That’s not saying he’s not a good fighter because he’s a really good fighter but he needs to be proven against a name someone [to] compare against.

“I’m definitely the biggest fight for Cacace. Whether he wants to hold on to that world title and go down that route that’s up to him. He’s got a decision to make. I seen interviews where he said he wants to financially get the biggest fights and I believe that’s me. He’d get a lot more money fighting me than he would Nunez. It’s his decision. I think it’s an exciting fight. It’s one for the fans no matter where it is. England, Ireland, Nottingham, Saudi – wherever it can be made it’s a great fight.”

Wood is currently a promotional free agent and has not fought since his thrilling stoppage win against Josh Warrington 12 months ago.
