AmyJo Doh & The Spangles release ‘It’s a Girl’ — punk with a purpose
AmyJo Doh & The Spangles return with new single It’s a Girl on 10 September, mixing raw punk energy with a pointed message about women, history and social change.
Madrid-based punk rock outfit AmyJo Doh & The Spangles, fronted by British singer-songwriter AmyJo Doherty, release their new single It’s a Girl on 10 September.
The song begins with the familiar absurdity of a gender-reveal party — pink cake, blue cake, “it’s a girl!” — before rapidly opening out into something much bigger: a roll call of women written out of history and a refusal to accept the patterns of silencing that have followed them.
“It’s not about gender,” says Doherty. “It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all of us — compassion, respect, harmony, empathy. Look where all that anger and ‘divide and conquer’ energy has actually gotten us. Enough is enough. The time has come for change, and it starts with each one of us.”
It’s the sound of a band leaning fully into what they call “punk with a purpose” — raw, riotous and danceable, but with something to say.
The release also comes with a Spanish-language B-side, Menú del Día, a love letter to the classic dishes and lunchtime chaos of Madrid’s traditional tascas. Everyone, the band insist, is welcome to pull up a chair — except racists and fascists.
AmyJo Doh & The Spangles will play three UK dates around the release:
4 September — The Society, Oldham
5 September — Lounge About, Manchester
6 September — RecoverFest, Uttoxeter
They then return to Spain for a full EP launch event in Madrid on 12 September, presented in partnership with Amnesty International.
The band have already clocked up more than 100 live shows, released two albums through Sweepland Records and Strap Originals UK, and toured across the UK and Europe with The Libertines and Pete Doherty.

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
