Being the grumpy old bastard he’s always been, Jack White releases his seventh album on us without any pre press pomp and just expects us to love it as always. He’s bang on the nail as usual with a balls out dirty lo fi affair that never lets up with his scuzzy garage sound that grips your nether regions like a vice. Wayne AF Carey reviews…
Where the heck does Jack White get his sound? He turns up, plugs his guitar in and produces some of the best music around. He’s taking the piss. This whole record sounds like he’s just got up, dusted the cobwebs from his recording area and decided to have a laugh with the music business. Many bands try their utmost hardest to make a record, paying shitloads of money for producers and engineers. White just plugs his guitar in and wipes the floor with everything like an old blues master with a chip on his shoulder. If you were ever lucky enough to see him live with The White Stripes you’ll know I’m not talking bollocks here.
He kicks straight in with the low fi G.O.D. And The Broken Ribs which displays his wizardry from the start. He’s got the sound sussed with his amazing sound, which continues with his awesome shredding sound in Derecho Domino which if you don’t know is a slight nudge at Derek and his Dominos, warped psych madness that fucks you up. There’s Nobody There starts with a simple Sabbath riff, yet White doesn’t do simple. He plugs the Bonham drum riffs and makes his own version of Led Zep into a gnarled up sound that thrills the fuck out of you. Raising The Grain is monstrous as fuck, taking us back to the old rock days with a belting catchy riff that makes your head nod like a crazy bastard.
What’s great about White is he can take every track he does into dirty blues with great riffs which saves me reviewing every track on this album and boring you. Every track is classic rock riff bastardness like You’ll Never Fix Me and the 6 Music motherfucker of Dollar Bill, which has the best blues riff going before turning into a rock behemoth. The ultimate track is the mind bending guitar smasher of Neighbours Blues which brings out the monster of his huge ambitious sound that just takes every other modern guitarist out of the park.
It’s a huge album that shits over everything he’s done in the past. Is he showing off? Of course he is! Why wouldn’t you if you can play guitar like this? It’s absolutely spine tingling stuff that excites me like fuck.
Like me and my music guru have always said: He sounds like someone falling down a few flights of steps with his guitar in hand having a fight and just coming up with some genius.
Probably the greatest guitarist in the world at the moment and second to none.
