Of course there is a huge police presence around the Donald Trum visit. He is of course the president of the USA which is stillthe most powerful country in the world.
Is it a good thing he came to Scotland. I think so but many do not. Rather people like Swinney and Starmer and many others would make an enemy of him.
And so it is with so many others. I read the Edinburgh Evening News this morning and in one piece they described him as criminal, wandering hands, human pumpkin and other such defamatory and or pejorative comments.
But the Edinburgh Evening News are not alone. Indeed i have seen other articles saying how the golf courses at Mennie and indeed Turnberry are shall we say not up to it. Trump however on landing made mention of how Turnberry was the best golf course in the world against the question of another reporter who was opining the opinion that it was sub par. He also happened to mention that the Royal and Ancient had spent money installing power and media link infrastructure into every green. But no, talk Scotland Down is the way. F*ck him, piss him off, tell him to GTF – its our way. That I am afraid is why Scotland is the first world economic superstar most powerful devolved or is it non nation in the world.
So Trump chose to come to Scotland. The land of his mother’s birth. He didn’t choose to go to England, he chose Scotland. And whilst many it Scotland don’t want him, Starmer came, and Von der Leyan comes to Scotland on Sunday.
Trump may be many things. Folks may not always agree with his politics or policies but he is man you want to do business with and certainly not make an enemy of it.
Visit Scotland could not have bought the world wide advertising that Trump’s visit has brought to Scotland. Nor is the symbolism of the Prime Minister and Europe’s most senior politician Von der Leyen coming to Scotland missed.
World politics are big politics with huge twists and turns, and certainly not easy – and against that Trump came to poor wee Scotland. I think Trump was making a point and whether we agree with all that he says or does, it should be a cause of welcome.
