Ex-Attorney-General Adangor Rejects Redeployment, Tenders Resignation From Rivers State Cabinet

Prof. Zacchaeus Adangor (SAN), formerly the Attorney General, who was recently assigned to the Ministry of Special Duties by Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has tendered his resignation from the Rivers State Cabinet.

In a letter addressed to the Secretary of the Rivers State Government, Tammy Danagogo, seen on Wednesday, Adangor expressed his refusal of the new assignment and his decision to step down from the Rivers Executive Council, effective April 24, 2024.

This marks Adangor’s second resignation, as he had previously stepped down from his position as the Attorney General on December 14. His initial resignation stemmed from a conflict between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Adangor cited the preservation of his reputation as his motive for leaving the government. He accused Governor Fubara of interfering with his duties as the Attorney General, alleging that the governor had instructed him not to defend or oppose lawsuits filed against the Attorney General and the Government of Rivers State by individuals sponsored by the state government.

In his statement, Adangor expressed his unwillingness to serve under Governor Fubara any longer, stating, “I am no longer willing to continue to serve in the administration of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, in any capacity whatsoever.”

He further elaborated on the interference he faced in performing his duties, claiming, “The Governor of Rivers State had in the past couple of weeks willfully interfered with the performance of my duties as the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice.”

Adangor’s resignation comes amidst ongoing tensions within the Rivers State government and adds to the recent series of changes in the state’s leadership.
