We Are Muffy, the collective efforts of Angeline Morrison and Nick Duffy (The Lilac Time), released their last full-length album, The Charcoal Pool, in 2018 via Tapete Records. In the interim, they have managed to knock out some shorter releases, including a brilliant Lonnie Donegan skiffle rendering via their The Daddy-OTrilogy.
Last week, they released 20th Century Folk Hymnal as a digital and highly limited 7″ lathe vinyl single in a picture sleeve (the track did appear on a CDr from 2017, and I featured it in a 2018 Mixtape here). The good news is that this is also the lead track for a new album titled “Lost Things Returning” (out on September 6, 2024).
Track notes: Nick and Angeline have recorded a classic new song which calls on the “water of beauty” to wash over the cries of “you’re not one of us” and “don’t belong here” being “neither fish nor fowl”. It’s backed with Eel Song (which doesn’t appear on the album) and was inspired by the eels that live in the canals of Nick and Angeline’s native Birmingham.
Sounding like a modern-day version of Serge Gainsborough and Jane Birkin, their minimalistic musical approach really highlights how gifted they are. They mould these deceptively simple songs into gorgeously quirky and irresistible lo-fi folk-pop.
