Throat is the new musical partnership between Mark Mckowski (The Lost Brothers) and Nick Power (The Coral). Their first self-titled offering is described as seven minutes of surreal, often disconcerting sound. It skirts the borderlands of psychogeography, and the accompanying video by Devin Morgan and Eddie Levine is intuitively plugged into Mckowski and Power’s mindset. The result is a fascinating folk horror offering—like a bleak lysergic-fuelled version of The Wicker Man; it’s unnerving but strangely leaves wanting more.
Like discovering a cassette buried in the dirt, decayed by time, filled up with field recordings of plucked strings, footsteps, theremin and cardboard box percussion, mystery music that unfurls with the addition of a walkie-talkie vocal and an ominous, descending analogue bass sound.
Melding uneasy intensities, apprehensions toward decay and tongue-in-cheek sensibilities, filmmakers Devin Morgan & Eddie Levine depict a feverish delirium into the concept of ritual – both daily and ceremonial. With imagery evoking the gnashing of teeth and cassette tape tearing like ribbon, folk horror turns analog to capture the anxious aural stylings of Nick Power & McKowski.
Our first child and calling card. A ‘loner song’ about a man on a midnight drive around his local Multiplex cinema, looking for something he can’t decide is within or outside him. Competing with bohemian rhapsody for longest single ever, the track lasts 8 minutes and the vocals don’t come til halfway through. The music was improvised, stream of conscious style, using only instruments that were unfamiliar. There are no guitars on the track.

Recorded in the period of 2021 and 2024 between Omagh, Northern Ireland and Merseyside, Throat is a journey through McKowski and Power’s shared imaginations. They are working on more music for release later in the year. We can’t wait to hear it.
