‘We are Working on a Sustainable Minimum Wage’, Govs Assure Nigerians

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum has assured Nigerians that they are working tirelessly to find a sustainable solution to the minimum wage conundrum.

According to the Chairman of the Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazag, “We are reviewing our individual fiscal space as state governments and the consequential impact of various recommendations, to arrive at an improved minimum wage we can pay sustainably.

”The governors acknowledged the current challenges faced by workers, saying “We understand the struggles of our workers, and we are committed to finding a solution that works for all.

” They emphasized that their goal is to find a minimum wage that is not only sustainable but also benefits both workers and states.Governor Abdulrazag noted that the 37-member tripartite committee on national minimum wage is still in consultation and has not yet concluded its work. “We are working closely with the labour unions and other stakeholders to find a solution that is acceptable to all,” he said.

The governors’ assurance comes amidst concerns over the sustainability of the labour unions’ demand for a monthly minimum wage of N615,000. While some have questioned the feasibility of this demand, the governors have promised to work towards finding a solution that takes into account the fiscal realities of the states.

As the negotiations continue, the governors have urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, saying “We are committed to finding a sustainable solution that benefits all, and we will work tirelessly to achieve this goal.”
