Nadia Reid signs with Chrysalis Records and shares her powerful new single, Changed Unchained, marking the closing of a chapter as she embraces a fuller sound.
In the accompanying press for Nadia Reid‘s new single, ‘Changed Unchained‘, we are told there is a photograph she still keeps, taken ten years ago on an old iPhone 4. It shows the singer at just twenty-two, standing in a backyard in Auckland, her face obscured by a bright bloom of sparkler flame (see below). “It was just a throwaway photo, but I clung to that image through the years,” she says. “You have those points in life that when you look back you see were a time of almost cellular change. And that was one of those points; all my cells were changing.”
Reid, who has signed to her new label Chrysalis Records, will soon reveal details of her fourth album, but for now, we get to hear her first single, represented by this photo that once again represents change.
Reid’s been through some remarkable musical developments. When we reviewed her 2016 debut, ‘Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs‘, our reviewer, James MacKinnon, concluded: “Few debuts sound so fully formed, but this one shows an emergent talent whose work possesses a quiet intensity that moves you gently, but surely just as the moon tugs the tide.”
Changes have not just been musical – in the space between her 2020 album, Out of My Province, and now, she gave birth to her first daughter, Elliotte, in 2021, with her second, Goldie, arriving this past Spring. This new single marks the closing of a chapter on her first three records as something like a trilogy, music that belonged to a time before everything changed. As she embraces a notably fuller sound, Reid shares: “’Changed Unchained’ is a great example of me bringing lyrics and a melody into the studio, then Tom (Healy, producer) and the band letting the mojo/muse/spirit do its thing in the room. That was a really freeing feeling for me. The song begun in this delicate introspective way and formed into something quite powerful.”

Nadia is currently on a SOLD OUT solo tour in the UK, playing a short run of intimate venues. She’ll then return to tour Europe/UK in March ’25 with a full band in support of her new record (dates below).
