Flowering throughout September, October and November, these flowers are some of the most popular you will see in bloom throughout the autumn months. 

Flowering in September

The start of the autumn season, September begins a season of change for gardens and wildlife. As colder temperatures approach and days begin to shorten, leaves start to fall and summer flowers slowly lose their vibrancy. However, all is not lost. With the start of autumn brings lots of exciting developments within the garden too. As new plants take over and the beautiful rich colours of the season start to show. Below are just a select few of the flowers we can expect to see blooming throughout the month of September. 

Verbena

Offering varieties with blooms of rich purples, pinks, mauves and winter white, the verbena provides colourful displays from summer and into autumn. With this long flowering season they are a popular option for bedding plants, to add colour and variety to your garden. 

Hydrangea 

The much-loved hydrangea will continue to flower post-summer and provides the much-needed colour your garden needs at this time of year. You can even plant more Hydrangeas throughout the autumn season in moist, well-drained soil. 

Scabiosa 

Often fondly nicknamed ‘pin cushions’, scabiosa provides pretty lavender, blue and sometimes white flowers. They are a perfect choice for your borders, and look great in cottage-style gardens. Varieties such as the scabiosa butterfly blue will bloom continuously throughout spring and well-into autumn. 

Flowering in October 

As October rolls around and the clocks are set to fall back, Autumn truly begins to settle in. Leaving a cosy feeling in the air. While it’s not a time many plan to spend  hours outside in the garden, the fresh mornings can provide some ideal moments to enjoy the latest additions to your garden. 

Salvia 

A popular perennial, salvia is a colourful, compact perennial that is ideal for container growing as well as to add variety and dimension to your borders. Also known for their fragrance, not only do they provide colour but scent too. Different varieties will bloom well-into October, including the popular ‘Hot Lips’ which is a hardy choice that can survive in temperatures as low as -5 degrees. 

Geum 

The final flowers of a Geum will be seen as late as October. Offering bright yellow and oranges which look perfect in an Autumn garden. Planting a Geum in moist but well-drained soil guarantees healthy and long-lasting blooms. 

Rudbeckia

The late-flowering Rudbeckia provides your garden with unique star shaped flowers in shades of yellow, orange, dark red and also brown. Flowering from August through to the end of October, they are a great choice for those who wish to preserve the colour of summer in their garden for as long as possible.

While temperatures are much cooler in the month of November, it is certainly possible to enjoy the bloom of flowers in your garden. Taking care to choose hardy perennials, your garden can continue to thrive even in temperatures below freezing. 

Aster 

Aster is a broader term that refers to a large group of plants. There are a wide variety of aster species providing your garden with different colours, heights and styles. With colourful displays lasting as late as November, you can be sure that a variety of aster is a good choice for your containers as well as borders and beds. 

Cyclamen

Cyclamen are a hardy type of plant that will survive the colder temperatures of winter. They need limited protection from frost. They can also be kept indoors, if you prefer, as a houseplant as long as they are placed in a cool and light spot in your home. 

Thunbergia 

With its striking orange flower, Thunbergia will bloom throughout its long-flowering period between April and as late as November. So, you can continue to enjoy the bright colours of this reliable plant even on dark November days.
