Next Tory Leader. Which MP is backing whom. | Conservative Home


With four candidates left in the race to become leader of the Conservative Party the next stage of the contest moves to Party Conference in Birmingham.

What follows is a list of candidates and their declared supporters which will be frequently updated and amended.

Dame Priti Patel was knocked out in the first ballot (4/9), Mel Stride in the second (11/9), leaving Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly joint third on 21 votes, Kemi Badenoch second on 28 and Robert Jenrick in front on 33.

119 votes were cast in that second ballot. 118 in the first. It is understood Rishi Sunak has not voted in either.

We name the four left in the race in alphabetical order and all those who’ve publicly declared for the candidates and the date the MP in question made a statement.

We have also included, for reference, below that list, all those who declared for the two candidates who have been knocked out, at the time they were still in the race and indicated where they have moved their vote if they have said so.

This list accounts for 55 of the 121 MPs in the Conservative parliamentary party.

The third and fourth ballots which will end with a final two candidates take place in the week commencing the 7th of October 2024

The final two will be voted on by the membership of the Conservative party. The result will be announced on 2nd November 2024.
