Dead Writers: Bush Hall, London – Live Review

Since first crossing Louder Than War’s radar, up and coming band Dead Writers have been on a steady ladder-climb. Tonight, they’ve been asked to support Pale Waves at the recent BIMM Music Institute Opening Party held at London’s Bush Hall to welcome new students.

Iconic and intimate, fresh from hosting recent Sex Pistols shows, Bush Hall in London was buzzing once again, this time with groups of new university students ready to listen to some incredible live music; Dead Writers, in the guise of a Queen/The Cure fever dream band, blending goth with theatrics, took to the stage under moody red and blue light.

The band’s style and stage presence is nothing short of alluring and, despite them being the first act of the evening, they were able to quickly grab the attention of the audience as they opened with upcoming single Meet The Shadow.

Dead Writers It’s very obvious that singer Paul Shine is deeply passionate about his music and enjoys performing it for others, making it almost impossible to look away from his groovy dancing and impressive vocals. On top of his amazing vocal talent, Shine is also a great pianist and made sure we all knew it as the band progressed onto the second song of the night, Lisa – with its extremely catchy and dynamic beat with layers of the piano, guitar riffs and Shine’s rocking vocals bursting through the sound.

Although the stage was small, the Dead Writers energy was not – in fact, Shine took it off the stage and into the crowd, dancing and high-fiving the excitable audience along the way, before bringing out some beautiful roses dried by Paul himself and handing them to members of the crowd – a lovely sentiment.

Dead Writers Dead Writers brought their set to a close with one final bang as they played She’s All The Animals, with bundles of energy and power – the perfect choice to leave the crowd buzzing and warmed up for the following acts to come.

This was my first time hearing and seeing Dead Writers and I was very pleasantly surprised. A very charismatic band with a super retro rock melded with indie vibe, I hope to see them again in the near future – on a larger stage perhaps?
