Emmy Awards 2024 full list of WINNERS: Hacks beats The Bear in major upset for top comedy honor as Shogun SWEEPS the board in drama at 76th annual show

Hacks beat The Bear in a major upset for the top comedy honor as Shogun swept the board in record-breaking fashion for the drama categories  at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards which featured a star-studded red carpet.

The HBO comedy starring Jean Smart – who earned Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series – and Hannah Einbinder ended the night on top  with a win in the Outstanding Comedy Series category over the FX series at the gala event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.

Meanwhile Shogun broke the all-time record for a single season of TV with 18 as the show not only earned top honor Outstanding Drama Series but also Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor In A Drama Series for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, respectively.

When it came to the limited or anthology series categories, it was Netflix smash-hit Baby Reindeer which earned Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series in addition to Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Richard Gadd and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Jessica Gunning.

This year’s ceremony was held less than a year after the 75th edition of the show which took place this past January after being moved back from its intended September 2023 date due to the writers and actors strikes.

Even aside from The Bear, Hacks triumphed over a very impressive field for Outstanding Comedy Series which also included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Reservation Dogs, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, and What We Do in the Shadows.

Showrunner, co-creator, and actor Paul W. Downs accepted the top prize for Hacks as he said: I have no thoughts in my brain. Thank you so much to the academy. Let’s brace ourselves. I might get emotional. I have to say that we are so lucky to live our dream and make television. And we couldn’t do it without our Hacks family.

‘All of our writers, all of our cast, all of our crew who make our dreams come true literally. Look at the camera operators tonight doing incredible work making this happen. Thank you to the crew. Thank you. You know, when we pitch this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we did not know if we would sell it. We really have to thank Casey boys and Sara, everyone who has helped us make this show. You know, there are about 20% of our population is over 60 plus, and there are only 3% of those characters on television. And I would like to see more of them because while I’m a great, young supporting actor, I really want to be a good, old lead.’

Fellow co-creator and showrunner Lucia Aniello took over the microphone to finish off the night by revealing they are back on set in just five days.

She said: ‘Thank you so much. I mean, comedy is so important, obviously, to us. But we really feel like it can bridge divides when you laugh with someone and you have something in common with them. So please support comedy. It speaks true to power. It really does. So support your local comedian. And we have to go because we start shooting the next season in five days. So thank you and good night!’

The series explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old.

It was shaping up to be a massive night for The Bear as the series was vying for a sweep of the comedy series acting categories but it did not happen as Ayo Edebiri was beat out by Hacks star Jean Smart in the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series category earlier in the night.

In addition to Ayo, the 73-year-old Seattle-native also bested Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary, Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building, Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale, and Maya Rudolph, Loot.

During her acceptance speech the talented actress said: ‘Oh, god. Thank you. Thank you so, so much. I — it’s very humbling, it really is. And I appreciate this because I just don’t get enough attention. I’m serious. Okay. Anyway, no, thank you. I have so many, so many people to thank starting with our beautiful show runners.

Gadd, 35, who starred, wrote, directed, and created the highly-popular Netflix series earned two wins in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series and Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series categories.

The comedian beat out an impressive field for the acting gong as he won over Matt Bomer, Fellow Travelers, Jon Hamm, Fargo, Tom Hollander, Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, and Andrew Scott, Ripley.

During his acceptance speech he praised one of his fellow nominees profusely as he said: ‘You’re all crazy, honestly. Thank you. Thank you so much. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting this one at all, and I didn’t prepare. I’m not Jon Hamm. I’m your biggest fan, as I told you last night over and over again. Thank you.

‘Thank you to the directors, Veronica and Josephine. Thanks to all the people I mentioned previously as well. I’d like to thank my mom and dad, a glaring omission from the previous one as well. They’re the best. We’ve had trying times as a family and they have been there for me, a constant course of love and support. They never ever told me what I needed to do with my life and they never told me what I needed to be. I think that’s the greatest gift a parent can give a child. They always said follow your heart and the rest will fall into place. I think that’s good advice. Follow your heart and the rest will fall into place. Thank you.’

For the Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series categories prize he won over Charlie Brooker – Black Mirror, Noah Hawley – Fargo. Ron Nyswaner – Fellow Travelers, Steven Zaillian – Ripley, and Issa López – True Detective: Night Country.

I never thought I would be able to rectify myself and get myself back on my feet again. Here I am just a decade later picking up one of the biggest awards in television, yeah. Now, I don't mean that -- I don't mean that to sound arrogant. I mean that for anyone going through a difficult time right now to persevere. I don't know much about this life. But I do know nothing lasts forever. And no matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. If you are struggling, keep Keep going. And I promise you things will be okay.
