It’s not often that you find a TV show so good that you’re glued to the screen. It’s even less often that you love a show so much that you leave glowing reviews online, but it seems this new Netflix series is about to change that.
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody’s new rom-com series, Nobody Wants This, landed on the streaming giant today, and as well as being ‘highly bingeable’, fans are so impressed with it that its score on Rotten Tomatoes is almost perfect.
Created by Erin Foster, the show is inspired by real-life events and follows the unlikely love story between a sex podcaster and a newly single rabbi, and its become a clear winner with viewers.
Many have shared their thoughts on the show on the popular film and TV rating website Rotten Tomatoes, with one claiming it is a ‘joy’ to watch, while others say Kristen and Adam, both 44, have ‘incredible chemistry’.
‘It’s a joy to watch Bell and Brody bounce off each other like this, each at the top of their game. And it’s a shot in the arm for romantic comedies in general’, Dave Nemetz wrote.
‘Great writing, great cast, and incredible chemistry made this a binge wash for me, followed by a quick search for “Will there be a season 2?”. Loved this!’ Lorie J added.
Elsewhere, Tim Stevens said the show ‘isn’t doing anything revolutionary’ but that it ‘plays the hits well’ and by the end of the series, despite it being something ‘you’ve seen a hundred permutations of’, it feels ‘fresh and lively’.
While Lily Moayeri said: ‘The highly bingeable series has excellent comedy writing and a strong cast who move the episodes along at a quick clip. But even with all its on-point humour, Nobody Wants This has an undercurrent of seriousness.’
With an average score of 95% on the Tomatometer, the series is well on its way to becoming a Netflix favourite, so before you get cosy and watch it yourself this weekend, here’s everything you need to know.
What is Nobody Wants This about?
When a girl meets a boy, sparks fly, and they fall in love. Most of the time, their friends and family are in full support. But what happens when sparks fly between an unlikely pairing?
That’s the premise for Nobody Wants This.
The series follows the romance of Joanne (Kristen) and Noah (Adam) as they navigate not only the obstacles everyday couples have to face when they start dating but also their very different life views.
With the help of Joanne’s sister, Morgan, played by Justine Lupe and Noah’s brother, Sasha, played by Timothy Simons, they have some help dealing with their challenges, which includes meddlesome friends and family, making for a very fun watch.
Is Nobody Wants This based on a true story?
Show creator Erin revealed to Forbes earlier this week that the series is, in fact, based on a true story, her own love story.
‘Simon came into my life and I didn’t expect it. He was my perfect person, which doesn’t mean we didn’t have conflict. He challenged me in all the right ways. He wasn’t what I expected,’ she said.
‘When I converted to Judaism it was an interesting process. I grew up in L.A. with a lot of Jewish friends and the idea of converting to me was like, “Sure, whatever. I’ll be Jewish. All my friends are Jewish.” But, converting for someone who has immigrant parents from the Soviet Union, who fled because they were Jewish, means something different.’
She continued to say she isn’t trying to ‘solve any world issues’ with the show’s creation but rather wants to ‘show Jewish culture in a positive light’.
‘I have had such a beautiful experience embracing Judaism in my own life. I’m excited to be able to share that on a global level.’
Who is in the cast?
Taking centre stage is Kristen, who plays the irascible, loud and agnostic Joanne. She is most well known for her roles in Veronica Mars and Bad Moms.
Adam, who shot to fame in The O.C. and Gilmore Girls, joins her as a lead and plays Noah, Joanne’s rogue rabbi love interest.
Elsewhere in the show, Justine, 35, most well known for her role in Succession, plays Joanne’s sister, Morgan, and Candy actor Timothy, 46, plays Noah’s brother, Sasha.
The Invisible Man star Paul Ben-Victor, 56, also stars in the series, along with Joyride actress Sherry Cola, 34.
How many episodes in Nobody Wants This?
Like many Netflix series nowadays, the rom-com has kept it short and sweet.
The series consists of ten episodes, the shortest of which is 21 minutes and the longest of which is 31 minutes.
Will there be a season two of Nobody Wants This?
There is no official word on whether the show will be renewed for another season, but since it ends on a big ol cliffhanger, it could very well return to our screens one day.
Speaking to Tudum, Adam said: ‘The tracks were laid very nicely for you to care about these characters and want them to be together.’
If past decisions are anything to go by, Netflix likely won’t reveal whether there is to be another season for another couple of weeks, so until then, sit tight and enjoy what the current ‘highly bingeable’ ten episodes have to offer.
Nobody Wants This is available to stream on Netflix now.
