London-based artist Cassie Kinoshi will present a specially curated programme alongside the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican on Thursday, 21st November 2024. Kinoshi’s regular band seed. will also perform at the show entitled Nature’s HEART, set to feature Kinoshi’s own works, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 and Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour. The concert will be part of this year’s London Jazz Festival.
A composer and saxophonist, Kinoshi was a winner at the 2018 Ivors Academy Awards in the Large Ensemble category for Afronaut, a piece inspired by African-American author Samuel R. Delaney’s science-fiction. Kinoshi’s most recent album, gratitude, was released by International Anthem in February 2024. (review here: https://klofmag.com/2024/02/cassie-kinoshis-seed-gratitude/).
It’s been suggested that calling jazz musicians ‘composers’ is redundant and imposes a certain hierarchy. Yet writing music of this album’s calibre is both a challenge and a privilege. Likewise, listening to it requires some investment of both mind and spirit. Made from the raw materials of Kinoshi’s life, gratitude overflows with harmony and clarity.
