Sam Gilley plans to exploit weaknesses in new title challenger | Boxing News

SAM GILLEY says he has seen gaps in Jack McGann which he plans to exploit tomorrow night at York Hall.

The Queensberry main event sees Gilley make the first defence of his Commonwealth super-welterweight title. Both fighters weighed in today with the pair coming in at 153lbs, one pound under the limit.

Originally, the plan had been for Queensberry debutant Gilley to face Louis Greene in a rematch of their domestic thriller 12 months ago. Greene withdrew with injury and McGann accepted the call to take the fight at short notice.

Speaking after today’s weigh-in Gilley revealed that he suffered a family bereavement recently.

“I’ve had a lot going on this year and sadly I lost my nan last Monday,” the champion said.

“She went through all her cancer treatment, she went through everything with a smile on her face. I had the hump for about 10 minutes and I was like what have I got the hump about? I’m still here, I’m still healthy.

“My nan showed you should always have a smile on your face no matter what situation’s going on. I had the hump for about 10 minutes and we clicked out of it. You’ve got to tackle each day as it comes.”

McGann has fought three times since Gilley’s last ring walk notching up wins against Alcibiade Duran and Lukasz Barabasz. In between, however, he was stopped in one round by Greene in Riyadh.

“He might be tentative because of what happened against Louis,” Gilley said.

“He might come steaming at me to try and get me out of there early. We gotta be covered with all aspects but no matter the outcome I want to get him out of there.”

McGann’s win against Barabasz came in June and saw McGann pick up his seventh win inside the distance finishing matters with a crisp left hand.

“We all sat in the gym and watched it,” Gilley said. “There’s gaps. Gaps I will find.”
