Sainsbury’s Boss Warns of Budget “Barrage of Costs” to Hit Shoppers

Sainsbury’s chief Simon Roberts has given Labour both barrels over their move to hike employer National Insurance rates while still dragging their feet on crucial business rate reforms. Roberts said Sainsbury’s NI bill alone is set to rocket by £140 million next year—a “very significant” 50% increase. He warned the “barrage of costs” will end up being passed on to hard-pressed shoppers. So much for ‘working people’ not bearing the brunt…

Roberts said the bombshell budget will only cause higher inflation, “and it’s clear it’s going to come pretty fast,” and unfairly “penalises retailers with physical store.” Meanwhile, he also said ministers must listen to farmers and U-turn on the IHT increases. Farmers hit and taxes hiked is a clear recipe for costly food…
