Trick Daddy Under Fire for Saying He Doesn’t Identify As “African American”: “I’ve Never Been to Africa…I Was Born & Raised in Florida!”

Rapper-turned-reality star and celebrity chef Trick Daddy whipped up quite the controversy on social media over the weekend thanks to his hot take on racial identity.

At a time where conversations around culture and social politics are boiling (due in great part to the results of last week’s U.S. presidential election that saw the first woman of color candidate Kamala Harris defeated by political polarizer Donald Trump), the emcee’s comments struck a sour note with many.

Taking to social media, Daddy (born Maurice Young) may have kept it a little too real when he spoke openly about his racial identity.

“I’m trying to figure out how ‘Afro’ get in front of my motherf***ing race,” he relayed (as seen in the video above). “I ain’t never been to Afro-ca. I have never been to Africa. Afro or Africa. Never been there. I’m not from Africa. I was born and raised in Goulds, Florida. I was born in Goulds, raised in Liberty City in the Pork-N-Beans projects. Ain’t never went to Africa, ain’t thinking about going there. And I heard it’s a beautiful place, yes. And I know it’s the motherland, yes. But not my mother, not her mother, and not her mother’s mother, that ain’t their land. Americans’ real true land is right here, on U.S. soils.”

Despite garnering mixed reviews from commenters, Young doubled down on his stance which marks the latest in a string of race-related statements he’s rendered over the years including suffering backlash for once claiming Black women were “useless” compared to their Latina counterparts.
