Howdy! With God-Emperor Donald Trump’s triumphant return to the White House, we asked our panel their thoughts on the US election. The obvious question: how would you have voted? A clear majority would have picked Trump, with 60.5 per cent backing the 45th President. Only 24.1 per cent opted for Kamala Harris. 15.4 per cent did not know or would have chosen someone else.
Yet perhaps the Donald underperformed. When asked which American party our panellists would be registered as more than two-third – 67.9 per cent – opted for the Republicans, and only 9.1 per cent the Democrats. 10.3 per cent would be Independents, 11.5 per cent did not know, and 1.2 per cent opted for “Other”. The ConHome Libertarians are small in number, but mighty.
Finally, we asked our panel whether they thought this new imperial overlord was good or bad for us out in Britannia. 60 per cent thought it was likely positive for our interests. 23.6 thought it was definitely good, and 36.4 that it was probably good. 27.7 per cent thought it was probably or definitely bad. 7.9 per cent thought it was immaterial and 4.4 per cent didn’t know.
What to make of these findings? The headline voting intentions are similar to those we received in 2020 when asking for the panel’s thoughts on Trump against Joe Biden. Back then, 56.3 per cent backed Trump, 22.5 per cent opted for the current President, and 19.2 per cent would have voted for neither.
The Republicans are our sister party. Trump is an Anglophile. We are already hearing positive noises over the Chagos Islands and a putative trade deal. The American left, much like our own, seems both clueless and obnoxiously w*ke. So it’s no surprise if our survey rowed in behind Trump. With both the weltgeist and ConservativeHome behind him, his Presidency will be magnificent.
But around a third of our survey would disagree. Tory members are not a monolithic block of right-wingers. A substantial minority of the membership, however one chooses to define it, finds Trump as unconscionable as it did Boris Johnson, Brexit, or Liz Truss. We are a broad tent.
