What is Plantation Grand Café?

Located in Sainte-Marie, in the commune of Capesterre-Belle-Eau, the Grand Café plantation is a must-see tourist site in Guadeloupe. This incredible 14-hectare banana plantation immerses you in the world of bananas.

In the beginning, the family estate, more precisely 3 generations, produced coffee, cocoa and vanilla until the middle of the 20th century. Then, for a number of historical reasons, they specialized in growing bananas on the estate. In 1928, a cyclone destroyed the cocoa and coffee plantations. Then, in the 70s, the sugarcane crisis began. As a result, many farmers turned to banana cultivation, and bananas became the mainstay of Guadeloupe.

For 2 hours, you’ll take an in-depth tour of the banana plantation. The guide will explain the different stages of the plantation, its birth, its operation and its history. At times, he’ll take you down to explain the details of this fantastic place. You’ll be delighted to learn that there are 1,500 varieties of banana. The plantain banana is the most widely grown in Guadeloupe.

Guadeloupe bananas are considered the cleanest in the world. It is picked green. Then it’s washed, labeled, packaged and refrigerated for transport.

• Visit by tractor for a more immersive experience.
  

Discover the banana plantation on board a covered wagon pulled by a tractor. This ride allows you to be totally immersed in this natural environment.

• Tasting the flavours of Guadeloupe and souvenir store

During the discovery tour, you’ll be offered a few banana tastings. You’ll be able to taste banana juice and coffee.

What’s more, there’s a souvenir store where you can take home magnificent treasures from this sensational plantation.

A magnificent garden, where you can admire tropical flowers and fruit trees, is also part of the visit.

Monday to Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (the plantation is closed in September)
