NOS Alive, Lisbon – Festival Preview

NOS Alive is back this July for its 16th edition, with the likes of Pearl Jam, Arcade Fire, and Dua Lipa descending on Passeio Marítimo de Algés in Lisbon.

The three-day festival runs from 11th to 13th July on the banks of the River Tagus, a 10-minute journey from the city centre. This year the eclectic line-up also includes: evergreen ’90s stars Smashing Pumpkins (featuring their new touring guitarist, Kiki Wong, who was picked from over 10,000 applicants); Canadian punk-rockers Sum 41, who are currently on their farewell world tour; and the “Queen of Popiano”, Tyla

Other names gracing the NOS Alive stages this year are psychedelic soulsters Black Pumas, 4AD legends The Breeders, Norwegian electro-pop dervish AURORA, classic R&B revivalists Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Mercury Prize winner Michael Kiwanuka, Brit Award-nominated singer/podcaster/reality TV judge Jessie Ware, American blues rock sisters Larkin Poe, avantgarde singer-songwriter-performance artist Benjamin Clementine, English rockers Nothing But Thieves, dance-electronic duo Sofi Tukker, psychedelic stars Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Australian jazz-funksters The Cat Empire, electronic music producer/DJ/ musician Floating Points, electropop five-piece Parcels, and psychedelic rockers Khruangbin.

Since beginning in 2007, NOS Alive has featured performers like Arctic Monkeys, Rage Against The Machine, The Weeknd, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Dylan, Radiohead, Metallica, Coldplay, The Prodigy, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. The first instalment was headlined by the Beastie Boys, and this year’s returning visitors, Billy Corgan’s Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam (whose song Alive gave the festival its name).

Last year’s event, boasting 123 performances, was attended by over 165,000 people — most attracted by the music, some also drawn by the sights and sounds of nearby Lisbon. From the MAAT (Art, Architecture and Technology Museum) and the views from the architectural UFO Panorâmico de Monsanto to clubs like Casa Independente or Lux, and restaurants including the famous Gambrinus, there’s plenty to do in city during the days before and after NOS Alive.

Tickets are available here.
