The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has dismissed talks suggesting the agency only targets internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo boys.”
Instead, Olukoyede stated that the agency uses a broad and thorough approach to combat all forms of economic and financial crimes.Speaking in Abuja during an Anti-Corruption Concert aimed at increasing public awareness and participation in the fight against internet crimes, Olukoyede reiterated his commitment to a comprehensive anti-graft campaign.
He emphasized the agency’s determination to pursue individuals involved in various economic offenses without discrimination.
Olukoyede stated that both high-profile individuals and those at the lower echelons would face prosecution.On concerns about the agency’s focus, the EFCC boss shared tye agency’s recent actions against two former governors, demonstrating that the EFCC’s efforts go beyond internet fraud cases.
While acknowledging the severity of internet-related crimes, Olukoyede warned young people about the dire consequences of engaging in such activities.
He stressed that a criminal record significantly limits future opportunities, including eligibility for public office, and carries a lasting social stigma.
Olukoyede urged youths to prioritize their future over short-term gains from illicit activities, stressing the importance of avoiding any involvement in internet crimes at all costs.
