Creature Creature; The Noise EP
Self Released
Loud and lairy but with their heads screwed on and their finger on the pulse, Brighton ‘alt-rock / punk’ band, Creature Creature, have plenty to say for themselves. Fortunately, it’s worth listening to, as Robin Boardman discovers for LTW.
The Noise EP showcases a band who get the balance between impassioned social comment and high velocity, energetic and enjoyably in your face rock just about right. Featuring Billy Lunn of The Subways, the lead single / title track sums up Creature Creature‘s approach to a tee, a breakneck roar of guitars and venomous vocals as they take aim at those obsessed with their own importance and status; ‘The Prince’s riches more than enough to compensate, No sweat, no shame, money talks a different game, Exonerate, victim blame, money talks when you’ve got fame, Celebrities, the fucking elite, waste of space, take a seat.’ Few escape the band’s ire, and with elections and a certain famous felon in the news, the timing could hardly be better. Subtle it ain’t, but sometimes you just have to say it as it is, and despite all the angst, The Noise remains as catchy as a spider’s web.
Gleaming The Cube is equally aggressive and adrenaline-fuelled, an anthem for disaffected youth; “I feel trapped, trapped by the rules, trapped by the government, trapped by the ones who are meant to guide us”, while Sucker For A Tragedy veers into stadium-filling epic rock territory with full-on production to match. Latest single, the introspective, balladic Linework, maintains the intensity as Creature Creature prove they’re far from being mere noise merchants, despite the EP’s title. Things are brought to a rousing close with another single, Youngstars!, a heart-felt punk-pop call to arms for the downtrodden kids. This is another litany of the failings of the establishment; food banks, mental health, violence, racism – you name it, Creature Creature are on the case. The loud and clear message that you don’t have to take it lying down is delivered with revolutionary fervour; ‘Dancing on dented roofs of cop cars, The misunderstood youth that you are, Scream your reasons and watch them bleed, Youngstars.’ Powerful stuff indeed.
Creature Creature refer to the likes of Frank Carter, Royal Blood, Idles and Dinosaur Pile-Up as inspirations, and another apt comparison would be The Wildhearts, whose ability to combine metallic ferocity with tuneful melody and cultural observation they share. Their sound will appeal to the skate kids and fans of American pop-punk, but they also display an energy and intelligence which will draw in the seasoned rockers. Singer Scully sums it up; “With ‘The Noise,’ we wanted to capture the essence of what makes punk-rock so exhilarating—the raw intensity, the unapologetic authenticity, the sheer catharsis of letting your voice be heard.” The Noise EP serves as a great introduction to what the band are all about and, if you like what you hear, there’s plenty more where that came from on the Two Finger Tantrum album.
