Thrill Jockey run a great video series called Deep Digs in which artists from the label are invited to choose some of their favourite Thrill Jockey releases and char about them. The latest features composer and harpist Mary Lattimore and Walt McClements, also a composer in his own right who plays accordion on their new album Rain on the Road, which came to fruition after they forged a friendship through overlapping tours and time spent on the road together. The duo will tour the UK in September; see the dates below.
The album features some beautiful long-form improvisations and shorter vignettes recorded in McClement’s apartment during a rainy December in LA. Their exploratory music is captivating and seems to be suspended in a moment that is both wistful and serene.
Lattimore says, “I can hear both the road-selves and the home-selves in these recordings, the two sides that don’t always get to meet.” McClements elaborates: “the rain both invokes serenity, as in the perfect peaceful drizzle at the mountain cabin, but can also be ominous… like when you are running late for a show, driving through a thunderstorm.”
They make some interesting choices for Deep Digs and recall memories they associate with the music. Lattimore’s recollection of her time with Jack Rose in Philly is especially moving. McClements choices, especially House and Land (featuring Sally Anne Morgan and Sarah Louise Henson), contrast well against his Colleen and Circuit des Yeux (Interviewed here) choices.
