Abuja, Nigeria, June 10, 2024 – Thirty-five members of the House of Representatives have introduced a Bill for an Act demanding a constitutional amendment to rotate executive powers among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. The aim, according to the lawmakers, is to ensure equal representation and mitigate the desperation and agitation for the creation of new states, News360 Nigeria reports.
Led by Rep. Ikenga Ugochinyere (PDP-Imo), the lawmakers made their case at a news conference held at the National Assembly in Abuja on Monday. Ugochinyere explained that the proposed amendment to Section III of the constitution would officially recognize the division of Nigeria into six geopolitical zones.
In addition, the bill proposes a single six-year tenure for the President and Governors, aiming to reduce government spending, increase efficiency, and promote national stability. “The bill is also seeking a reduction in government spending and wastage, efficiency in governance, and national stability by providing a single term of six years for the President and Governors,” Ugochinyere stated.
The lawmakers also advocated for the creation of two Vice President positions, one from the southern and one from the northern part of Nigeria. “The 1st Vice President shall be a succession Vice President, while the 2nd Vice President shall be a Minister in charge of the Economy, and both shall be Ministers,” Ugochinyere added.
The bill includes provisions for the financial autonomy and accountability of Local Government Councils by establishing an independent Consolidated Local Government Council Account. This account would be solely managed by Local Councils, with severe penalties for the misuse of local government funds.
Additionally, the bill seeks to amend relevant sections of the Electoral Act to ensure that all federal and state elections are held on the same day. It also proposes that all election-related litigation be concluded within six months before the swearing-in of the validly elected officials.
“Ours is a commitment to building a united, stable, and prosperous nation. Nigeria can and must become a great and modern nation,” Ugochinyere emphasized.
If passed, this bill promises significant changes to Nigeria’s political landscape, aiming to foster unity and reduce the contentious atmosphere surrounding state creation and election disputes.
