Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) Bill into law, a move widely seen as a game-changer for tackling the region’s developmental challenges.
The newly established commission will focus on rebuilding infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and addressing security concerns across the six states of the North Central—Benue, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
A former Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Usman Jibrin (rtd.), praised President Tinubu for his leadership and vision in making the commission a reality. He described the signing as a monumental achievement for the people of the North Central, calling it a long-overdue step toward development.
Speaking to The Bureau Newspaper, “This is a great step in the right direction,” Admiral Jibrin said. “For years, the North Central has struggled with infrastructure deficits, security challenges, and economic stagnation despite been blessed to enormous solid, liquid and gaseous resources. The highest in Nigeria. Now, we have a structured platform to tackle these issues head-on. I urge all stakeholders—government officials, community leaders, and citizens—to work together to ensure the commission delivers on its mandate.”
The push for a dedicated development commission for the North Central had been ongoing for years, with many arguing that the region needed the same level of attention as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC).
Now that the bill has been signed into law, the focus shifts to implementation—starting with the appointment of leadership and the rollout of programs that will drive meaningful change in the region.
For many in the North Central, this is more than just a policy decision—it’s a promise of progress, and they are eager to see how it translates into real impact on the ground.
