Since breaking into the mainstream in 2022, Nigerian artist Asake has quickly risen to global superstardom with a string of chart-topping hits and albums. His latest achievement came after selling out the O2 Arena in London for the second time, marking his growing influence in the international music scene.
On September 23, 2024, Asake released a new documentary about his musical journey and rise to fame.
Narrated by award-winning British actor Idris Elba, the documentary delves into Asake’s background, starting from the inner city of Lagos where he grew up. The title Lungu Boy, which translates to “ghetto boy,” captures Asake’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a music superstar. The documentary was released in tandem with his third album, Lungu Boy, which features collaborations with major artists like Wizkid, Stormzy, Central Cee, and Ludmilla.
Asake’s performance at the O2 Arena also marked a significant milestone in his career, where he was presented with both an O2 Arena sold-out plaque and a BRIT silver plaque for his album Work of Art, by Idris Elba. This album became his second to receive a BRIT silver certification, following his debut album Mr. Money With The Vibes.
Asake’s success in the UK has been remarkable, with all three of his albums reaching the top of the UK Apple Music Album Chart, making him the only Nigerian artist to accomplish this feat. His growing popularity continues to solidify his status as one of Nigeria’s most successful global music exports.
