Aston Villa vs Arsenal LIVE: Premier League result and reaction

(REUTERS)

Aston Villa and Arsenal played out a frustrating first half at Villa Park that was beset with stoppages and breaks of play that favoured the home side and stopped Mikel Arteta’s men finding any rhythm.

The Gunners dominated the early stages and created a fine chance through Martin Odegaard’s slipped pass into Bukayo Saka. Saka shifted to the left and shot only for Emi Martinez to touch the ball wide of the far post.

After that warning Villa sparked into life and a great press from Leon Bailey turned the ball over high up the pitch. Morgan Rogers ran it into the box and squared to Ollie Watkins only for him to hooks his shot wide of the target when facing an open goal.

That was the best chance of the first hald but Kai Havertz came close for the visitors after Gabriel Martinelli picked him out at the near post. The German, who found the back of the net against West Ham last week, could only prod the ball wide as the teams went into the half-time break on level terms.
