Climate Change: Kano to plant 3 million trees, to sanction illegal loggers

Disturbed by the negative impacts of climate change on the environment, the Kano State government, yesterday, vowed to sanction those engaged in tree falling.

It equally hinted of plan to mitigate effects of the global warming through planting of three million trees.

Governor Abba Yusuf made the declarations while launching the 2024 statewide tree planting campaign as part of measures to reduce the pressure of climate change on the environment.

He said it was imperative to embark on drastic measures to protect the environment in view of the extreme heat and harsh temperature that have experienced in the state in the last couple of years.

Yusuf observed that certain activities, including felling of trees and desertification, had worsened the situation.

Although the governor was not specific on the level and form of penalties against offenders, he, however, urged the people to inculcate the habit of planting of trees in their domains.

Similarly, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, called on the residents as well as district heads and ward heads to imbibe the culture of tree planting to mitigate climate change.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment, Nasiru Sule Garo, said the importance of trees could not be overemphasised, noting that, “more tree planting would aid in lowering the atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide. The more trees planted, the cleaner the air will be, and the air would be pure and free of toxins if there were sufficient oxygen.”
