Sir Keir Starmer is making his second visit to Scotland within a week this morning.
The Labour leader, who is hoping winning a large number of seats north of the border will help hand him the keys to Downing Street, is holding a major event on the banks of the River Clyde, due to get under way shortly.
He is expected to be flanked by his deputy Angela Raynor, in a bid to send a message to voters that Scotland would be “at the heart” of a Starmer government.
The choice of Greenock is significant. It is one of Scotland’s most deprived areas, and the Inverclyde constituency is a key target seat for Labour.
It is currently held by the SNP’s Ronnie Cowan, who has a majority of 7,512. Should Labour reclaim the seat, several others across the Scottish central belt, the party’s former heartland, would also be likely to turn red.
It is also one of the areas hardest hit by Scotland’s drugs deaths crisis, which despite a series of promises the SNP has failed to tackle.
The arts venue Sir Keir is speaking at close to the troubled publicly-owned Ferguson Marine shipyard, where two over-budget and delayed ferries have become one of the major SNP procurement scandals of the devolution era.
Sir Keir is expected to emphasise his plans to set up Great British Energy, a publicly owned clean power company. He will push back against industry warnings that his plans to expand a windfall tax on the oil and gas sector, and ban new drilling licences, will cost tens of thousands of Scottish jobs.
