Duke Blasts Purchase Of Presidential Jet – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

LAGOS – Former Cross River Gov, Donald Duke, criticizes the procurement of a new presidential plane, labeling it a “leadership failure” amidst Nigeria’s economic difficulties.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Inside Sources” show, Donald Duke criticized the presidency’s decision to purchase an Airbus A330 to replace the older Boeing B737-700 from the time of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Duke emphasized that acknowledging the nation’s challenges is more important than showcasing luxury, highlighting the essence of leadership. He called on President Bola Tinubu to treat Nigeria like his family, emphasizing that a leader’s actions should reflect the needs of the people.

The ex-governor didn’t hold back in his criticism of extravagant spending during tough economic times. “Splurging on a new jet or yacht or living luxuriously is a letdown. You can’t have hungry children while you’re out partying and flaunting expensive outfits,” Duke commented, underscoring the disparity between such indulgences and the harsh realities faced by many Nigerians.

“If life is tough, then I see it as my failure to provide for them or fulfill my responsibilities. I urge him (Tinubu) to treat Nigeria like his own family. What’s beneficial for his family is beneficial for the nation.”

This situation arises as Nigeria faces major economic difficulties, prompting concerns about the suitability of extravagant government expenditures. The presidency is yet to address Duke’s remarks.
