Police Arrest 76, DSS Apprehends Six Polish Nationals in Kano During #EndBadGovernance Protests
Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Police Command, in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), has made significant arrests in connection with the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests across Nigeria. The protests, which have spread nationwide, continue to draw attention to issues of governance and public dissatisfaction.
According to Abdullahi Haru, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, 76 individuals have been detained, including a tailor from the Niger Republic who has been accused of manufacturing ‘Russian flags’ used by protesters in the state. The tailor’s arrest highlights the unusual international dynamics at play in these protests.
Additionally, the DSS has apprehended six Polish nationals in Kano State. These individuals are alleged to have participated in the demonstrations over the weekend, raising concerns about foreign involvement in domestic affairs.
International Element in Protests
Haru confirmed the arrests to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, emphasizing the collaborative efforts between the police and the DSS in maintaining law and order. “The DSS arrested six Polish nationals for their involvement in the protest,” Haru stated. “It is not the police that arrested the foreigners. It is the DSS.”
Meanwhile, the police successfully detained 76 individuals, including a tailor from Niger Republic, suspected of creating foreign flags used during the protests. “We saw in the reports that the tailor was arrested by the DSS but it was actually the police that arrested the tailor with 75 others,” Haru clarified.
The arrests of the Polish nationals have drawn attention due to their participation in the protests on Saturday and Sunday, which marked the third and fourth days of the nationwide demonstrations. The presence of Russian flags among the protesters has raised further questions about the motives and influences behind these demonstrations.
Security Measures and Government Response
In response to the escalating situation, Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State convened an emergency meeting with key security officials, including the state police commissioner, Salman Dogo, on Tuesday. The meeting focused on strategies to maintain order and prevent further unrest.
“The police and other security agencies will clamp down on anyone attempting to tamper with the state’s security,” Dogo declared to journalists following the meeting. His statement underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the security challenges posed by the protests.
Following the discussions, Governor Yusuf announced a relaxation of the existing curfew, which will now be enforced from 6 am to 6 pm. This decision aims to alleviate the impact on residents while allowing security forces to maintain vigilance.
“We are committed to ensuring the security of Kano State and the well-being of our citizens,” Governor Yusuf said. “The relaxation of the curfew is aimed at easing the burden on our people while we continue to monitor the situation closely.”
Despite the relaxation of the curfew, the governor reassured residents that security forces remain on high alert to prevent any potential disturbances. The balance between maintaining order and respecting citizens’ rights remains a delicate challenge for the government.
