Games Inbox: Will the Nintendo Switch 2 be too expensive?

Is Nintendo more predictable than people think? (Nintendo)

The Monday letters page is confused about the ongoing story in God Of War, as one reader wonders about Indiana Jones And The Great Circle on PS5.

Proven success
I would be willing to bet a fair amount of someone else’s money that the Nintendo Switch 2 is not going to see some massive increase in price. When making consoles there are two things that are always true for Nintendo, at least in the modern age: they don’t want it to be too expensive and they don’t care that much about graphics.

Unless the success of the Switch has gone to their head – and I see no evidence of that in anything else they’ve done lately – I can’t believe they would break either of these two traditions. I’m going to bet that the Switch 2 is the same or similar price to the Switch at launch and that it will be fairly modest in terms of graphics.

I’m no technical expert but as powerful as the Xbox Series S seems quite the jump to me. Maybe it’s possible with new chip technology but there’s also the heat and space problem too. Nintendo don’t want to try and sell a handheld console the size of a house or one that sounds like it’s about to take off, because of all the cooling fans inside it.

Here I am trying to predict Nintendo, so what do I know, but as crazy as they seem sometimes. I don’t think they’d turn their back on everything that has worked for them up to this point.

Skip ahead
Count me as another person that will not be getting a PlayStation 5. Two or three years in is usually how long I wait to join a new generation but I feel like it would be pointless to get one at this point. There’s not nearly enough games, there’s very little that’s scheduled, and the PS5 Pro is coming out soon and so obviously will not be discounted.

Waiting two or three years for the PlayStation 6 makes much more sense to me, especially as it gives Sony and the games industry at large time to sort themselves out and get out of this rot. I consider myself a fairly keen gamer but if even I don’t think its’s worth making the jump I’m not surprised sales are falling. But then again I suppose casual gamers don’t know about a lot of these problems.

Setting the tone
I appreciate the Reader’s Feature at the weekend about Alien Isolation, as I also think it’s one of the best horror games ever made. It’s one of the few examples I can think of where a terrible review – the awful IGN one – tanked the reputation of a whole game before it was even out. The discussion around the game was very negative from the start and it never recovered until very recently, when people started to rediscover the game.

Ironically, it also happened with the other game at the weekend, Zelda: Twilight Princess, as that 8.8 from GameSpot is also responsible for a lot of negativity towards that game. Although personally, in that case, I happen to agree with it and feel that it is definitely the worst of the mainline 3D Zelda games.

Unexpected warning
I buy a lot of games from Limited Run Games (yes, I do buy games I don’t just get them all free on Epic Games Store!) and they have had a backlog of my orders from the past year or so which, just in the past recent weeks, they are catching up on by posting the games to me, so I am getting one or two games every other week.

One of the ones I got is Neo Geo Pocket Color Selection Volume 2 for the Switch and I noticed on the back of the case this warning, in very small writing, that is not on UK Switch game cases and it is not on PlayStation 4 and 5 games from Limited Run Games. ‘Warning: Cancer and reproductive harm’. I presume that warning is for if you ingest the cartridge?

On the subject of the game, I never had a Neo Geo Pocket Color at the time, because I didn’t have a lot of money and also because I was worried that the format wouldn’t last long. So I didn’t want to waste money on a platform that may not have many games for it, before it stopped getting support. So now that these
collections have come out I bought them to sample the games, I have Volume 1 as well.

Welcome compromises
I hope Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a hit. I was really surprised it was even being made, given the original was so long ago, but everything I’ve seen of it so far looks like my dream Warhammer 40K game.

As I gamer I also find it interesting because it looks really good visually and yet I would assume it’s fairly low budget, at least compared to the really big sellers. So how comes it looks so impressive? I’m going to guess because it’s fairly linear, not open world, and not 200 hours long.

If that’s the cost of getting less obvious games made I’m all for it, especially as the game length is a positive as far as I’m concerned. It is £60, which is obviously not ideal, but I’m sure I’ll figure out some way to get it cheaper, while still making sure the developer gets their money.

All or nothing
So I’ve seen rumours that the next big multiformat game is both Indiana Jones And The Great Circle and Microsoft Flight Simulator, as well as the original rumour of Forza Horizon 5. All of these seem believable, but I wonder if the disagreement is another indication that there’s still infighting going on within Microsoft? And disagreement on what they should do next.

These were all suggestions from leakers that have been right in the past, which suggests that their sources are saying one thing and then someone else’s is saying something. Unless it’s all three games at once, but I don’t think anyone has said that.

Indiana Jones And The Great Circle makes the most sense to me though, I can’t see how that game is going to be anything other than a massive flop as an Xbox exclusives, given how the last film did.

It’s a shame because it looks good, and very big budget, but even on PlayStation 5 I don’t see it doing much, unless it turns out gamers are massively bigger Indy fans than the average movie goer, which seems unlikely.

No, money down!
I’ve always wondered about these fan projects that are based on franchises owned by famously litigious publishers. Who spends three years of their lives making a Metroid remake or new Pokémon game, only for Nintendo to shut it down the second it’s ready for release? The same thing happens every single time.

I see in this new case, that the Modern Warfare 2 H2M mod has ‘leaked’ out anyway, but that’s not going to stop Activision suing those responsible. I can only assume that everybody involved in making these things gets all their legal information from The Simpsons.

Original only
I must say I’m not sure where God Of War is really going with its storyline. Like many, I was disappointed by the end of Ragnarök (although the overall game was good) as I don’t feel it really resolved anything between Kratos and Atreus. I especially don’t see how Atreus’ real name is going to play into the future of the series, if they’re not going to have any more games set in Scandinavia. Seems like that would be a weird thing to bring up in Egypt, or wherever, and yet it was the whole point of the ending of God Of War 1.

Or was it supposed to have been dealt with in Ragnarök, when Atreus was with Odin? If so, that’s even worse as I don’t even remember them mentioning the name at that point.

As much as I’ve enjoyed the reboot games, I have to admit I would prefer a new game using similar mechanics but with new characters and settings. Sci-fi would be fine, if it means the developer gets to try something that’s different.

This idea that every franchise has to go on forever is really becoming a problem in not just games but movies and TV as well. Personally, I’d make a rule that unless the original creators are involved that means the franchise can’t continue. That obviously wouldn’t happen but I think if you look at most series that’s the point at which they usually go downhill.

I see Sony is charging £60 for the Until Dawn remake. I don’t want to dogpile on the game but who wants to pay that for a remake of a mid PlayStation 4 game? Am I missing something here? Was it secretly a massive fan favourite hit and I missed it?

RE: Sigourney Weaver. I don’t know how I missed that interview from 2014. Excellent interview and well done on getting the chance to speak to her. I guess you only had a limited amount of time with her, but you asked some excellent questions.

GC: Thanks. We didn’t get long with her, but she was very nice. We also got the distinct impression she had researched gaming, and the topics that might come up, beforehand, which we’re sure most other celebs would never have bothered to do.
