Jamie Carragher believes one European football stadium is on another level to those in the Premier League.
Spurs’ £1bn Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, built in 2019 to replace White Hart Lane, is often hailed as one of the best in the world.
Tottenham supporters were sad to leave the iconic White Hart Lane but moving to a state-of-the-art stadium which managed to retain a superb atmosphere – something arguably lost at West Ham’s London Stadium – certainly cushioned the blow.
Featuring the world’s first dividing, retractable football pitch, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is multi-purpose, also hosting music concerts and NFL games.
Spurs may well boast the best ground in the Premier League ahead of the likes of Arsenal (Emirates Stadium) and Liverpool (Anfield). Fans are also curious to see how Everton’s new stadium will rank ahead of its introduction from next season.

But former Liverpool and England defender Carragher believes the Premier League stadiums are completely and utterly trumped by the Santiago Bernabeu.
Home of Spanish giants Real Madrid since 1947, the 78,000-seater stadium as hosted four Champions League finals and finals of both the World Cup and Euros.

The Bernabeu was redeveloped between 2019 and 2024 and is now even more deserving of the accolade of ‘best stadium in the world’, according to Carragher.
‘I was at the Bernabeu the other week for a Champions League game,’ Carragher said on The Overlap US.
‘Coming from England as a kid, you’d always ask your parents for a Real Madrid or Barcelona kit, those were the glamour clubs for us.
‘I was always Barcelona because Gary Lineker went there from Everton in the mid-80s. When I was speaking to the Spanish lads at Liverpool, they always saw Real Madrid as the club in Spain.

‘I played at the old Bernabeu but when I stood in the new stadium the other week, I was thinking, “this is the pinnacle”.
‘I was almost thinking, I can understand where Trent is coming from if he comes here! I hope he hasn’t seen this new roof!
‘But seriously, every time we go to Tottenham we say that stadium is one of the best in the world but Real Madrid’s stadium is the best in the world. It is.
‘It feels special when you’re on the side of the pitch.’
Shortly before the Bernabeu was reopened, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez described the new stadium as the ‘beginning of the club’s future’.
‘The history of Real Madrid has been moulded in this temple of world football,’ he said. ‘It is the pride of all madridistas.
‘It is part of our lives. And it will be our strongest ally to help us fulfil all our dreams. The new Santiago Bernabeu stadium will change the history of Real Madrid.’
