FORMER IBF featherweight champion Luis Alberto Lopez suffered a small brain bleed following his heavy knockout defeat against Angelo Leo on August 10.
The bout was brought to its conclusion in round 10 when Leo landed a thudding left hook which put Lopez on his back. Referee Ernie Sharif started the count but Lopez was in no position to continue. It had been the fourth defence of the title Lopez won against Josh Warrington in 2022. None of the four, however, hit Lopez like Leo did. The former WBO super-bantamweight champion later walked out of the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque as the new IBF featherweight champion.
Last night (August 17) during ESPN’s coverage of the Christian Mbilli-Sergiy Derevyanchenko undercard journalist Mark Kriegel revealed that Lopez had been left with a small brain bleed. The 30-year-old Mexican is now recovering but his future in the sport is uncertain having suffered the injury.
Everyone at Boxing News wishes Lopez a speedy recovery.
