My wife said I was ‘talking rubbish’ after £1m lotto win – but I got last laugh

A MAN was accused of “talking rubbish” when he phoned his wife to tell her of his £1,000,000 lottery win.

Mechanic Dave Williams, 58, wanted to share the good news with wife Sarah, 55, after he won the EuroMillions prize.

But disbelieving wife Sarah thought he was joking – and refused to believe it until he showed her some proof.

Sarah said: “I honestly thought Dave was winding me up.
“But when he showed me the ticket, and now when I see all those noughts in the bank account, I know it’s for real.”

The excited pair from Cardiff, South Wales, are now planning treats as they are expecting their first grandchild – and more joy.

She said: “I didn’t think anything could be more exciting than my son and his girlfriend giving us our first grandchild last year, but I think this is coming in a close second!”

Dave has battled throat cancer and Sarah suffers from health problems including spondylitis and the pair say the win will now help them enjoy their life a bit more.

Dave said: “We’ve both had it tough in recent years so we’re not wasting any time, we know that every minute is a gift.

“While it’s been really tough, we’re still here; this win feels like the light at the end of a very long tunnel and for once, it’s not the train coming towards us!”

I won Euromillions aged 17 but went back to work at my £8 an hour job an week later

Dave was sat in his office in Cardiff scrolling through his National Lottery app when he discovered what he thought was a £100,000 win on EuroMillions.

He instantly called The National Lottery saying ‘I think I’ve won £100,000’ but was disappointed when the call handler briefly put him on hold.

He said: “I thought I must have made a mistake and it was actually a tenner, so when the gentleman came back on the line to say ‘Mr Williams, you said you’ve won £100,000’ and paused.

“My heart really sank, only to leap once more when he continued: ‘I’m pleased to tell you, you’ve actually won £1million’.

The world’s biggest lottery wins

On August 8, 2023, Mega Millions brought the second greatest lotto amount ever won by a single person, as well as the second largest jackpot in history, when a ticket purchased in Florida won the $1.602 billion jackpot.

On November 7, 2022, a single-ticket holder from California won a staggering jackpot of $2.04 billion with Powerball, making it the largest lottery win by one person in history, LottoLand UK reports.

Powerball now holds the world record for the largest jackpot and single win.

Meanwhile, the largest lottery prize ever won in Britain belongs to an unnamed winner who scooped £195.7 million.

Powerball holds the record for the greatest jackpot ever awarded, as well as the second largest jackpot payout, with Mega Millions coming in third.

The Powerball jackpot is worth $2.04 billion (£1.79 billion), and while this is a staggering amount, it is still significantly less than the amount paid out in prizes by the Spanish Christmas Lottery, also known as “El Gordo,” which now has a new prize pool of €2.5 billion.

The difference is that El Gordo distributes the reward fund considerably more equally, thus no one will win a single jackpot payout comparable to that of Powerball.

A £110M EuroMillions jackpot is up for grabs tonight and could make you richer than Dua Lipa and real-life Barbie Margot Robbie.

The lucky one to take this eye-watering sum home would be fifteenth biggest UK National Lottery winner ever.

The jaw-dropping jackpot would also propel a single UK winning ticket-holder into the realms of the rich and famous.

As well as Dua Lipa and Margot Robbie, the winner would be over four times richer than Blake Lively who is worth around £23million, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Players are urged to get their EuroMillions tickets before 7.30pm on Friday June 7 to be in with a chance of winning this jaw-dropping jackpot prize.

Players can buy and check their tickets online by downloading the National Lottery app or visiting their website.
