Nigerian Policemen Accuse Senior Officers of Extortion for Promotion Interviews | The Bureau Newspaper

In a startling revelation, Nigerian policemen within the rank of the Inspector cadre have accused senior officers of extortion, alleging that they are being forced to pay N30,000 to secure promotion interviews. These accusations have brought to light deep-rooted issues of corruption within the Nigerian Police Force.

Nationwide Extortion Allegations

A group of policemen, speaking to SaharaReporters under the condition of anonymity, disclosed that the Inspectorate Promotion Board has mandated the payment of N30,000 as a prerequisite for participating in promotion interviews. This interview exercise, slated to commence on June 6, 2024, aims to evaluate Inspectors for promotion to the Officer Cadre. However, the officers claim they are being coerced into paying this substantial fee without any formal documentation or accountability.

Voices from the Ranks

One Inspector from Lagos narrated his experience, saying, “Here in Lagos, they are forcing us to pay the sum of N30,000 for the promotion. This is an act of extortion from police officers to other officers. You can’t even refuse not to pay. They will force you to pay.” He emphasized the pervasiveness of this practice, stating that it is happening across all zones in the country.

Another officer from Kogi corroborated this, revealing that in his state, the amount demanded is slightly lower but still significant. “The officers are asked to pay N20,000. It’s the same story everywhere. Our senior officers are extorting us because of promotion,” he said.

Systemic Corruption

These allegations suggest a systemic issue within the Nigerian Police Force, where corruption and extortion appear to be deeply entrenched. The compulsory payments demanded from Inspectors seeking promotion not only undermine the integrity of the promotion process but also place an undue financial burden on the officers, many of whom may already be struggling with inadequate salaries.

Lack of Accountability

Despite the gravity of these accusations, the Force Spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, has remained silent. SaharaReporters made several attempts to reach Adejobi for comments, including repeated calls, text messages, and WhatsApp chats, all of which went unanswered. This lack of response from the police spokesperson raises further concerns about the transparency and accountability within the force.

Implications and Reactions

The allegations have sparked outrage among the rank-and-file officers, who feel betrayed by their superiors. “This kind of corruption is what discourages many of us. We join the force to serve and protect, but how can we do that when our leaders are exploiting us?” one Inspector lamented.

The broader implications of these practices are troubling. They point to a culture of corruption that could erode public trust in the police force, compromise the effectiveness of law enforcement, and demoralize officers committed to their duty.

Calls for Action

There are growing calls for an independent investigation into these allegations. Many believe that only a thorough and transparent inquiry can address the root causes of corruption within the Nigerian Police Force and restore integrity to the promotion process.

Conclusion

As the interview exercise for promotions looms, the Nigerian Police Force faces a critical test of its credibility and integrity. The accusations of extortion by senior officers have cast a shadow over the promotion process, demanding immediate attention and action from both police leadership and the government.

For the Nigerian policemen caught in this web of extortion, the hope is that their voices will lead to meaningful reform and a police force that upholds the values of justice and fairness.
