Oleksandr Usyk’s Weight Announced Incorrectly At The Final Weigh-In

Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk have today weighed in for Saturday night’s much-anticipated showdown for the illustrious Undisputed crown. The question for fans now is how their weights, especially Oleksandr Usyk’s weight, might affect the fighters’ performances on the night, and if they can give us any hints as to who may emerge victorious.

Weighing in at 262lbs, The Gypsy King is coming in a whole 15lbs lighter than his last bout and at his lightest weight since fighting Otto Wallin in 2019. With many fans believing Fury was lucky to have not had that bout stopped as a result of a severe cut above the eye, it will be interesting to see if this significant weight drop will impede his performance or improve it.

Oleksandr Usyk’s Weight Wrongly Announced

The Ukrainian, seeking to become undisputed in his second division, stepped on the scales at a career heaviest of 233.5lbs, 12lbs heavier than his previous highest, leading many to suspect he’s aiming to stop the Morecambe man. However, there was a notable mix-up during the weigh-in when the official reading Usyk’s weight shouted the weight for Michael Buffer to announce to the crowd. Buffer signaled Usyk weighed 233.5 pounds when the official actually confirmed Usyk weighed 223.5. It remains to be seen if this will be the right game plan, with a heavier weight potentially being of detriment to Usyk’s impressive speed and work rate.

For both men, there are clear advantages to the weights they’ve come in at, with a much leaner-looking Fury appearing to be prioritizing speed against the elusive former cruiserweight ‘Cat’, who, now a fully-fledged heavyweight, is seemingly seeking to add increased power to his arsenal for Saturday’s bout.

With Fury coming off the back of a somewhat controversial split-decision victory over a boxing debutant in Francis Ngannou, many fans have been divided about how this may impact his quest for the belts, with some suggesting the less-than-impressive performance will have knocked the confidence of the Brit, and others suggesting it will have put a much-needed fire in his ‘greedy’ belly.

Despite winning by stoppage, Usyk’s last bout is also not without controversy, with some pundits and fans still disputing the referee’s decision regarding Daniel DuBois’ low blow in round five, and pointing out that attacking the body may be Fury’s key to victory.

Tyson Fury vs Oleksandr Usyk In Riyadh

Overall, Saturday night is shaping up to be a great night of boxing, and though the weigh-ins may provide hints at the fighters’ game plans, there are a great many other elements that may play into the boxers’ performances, with Usyk earlier this week filing a complaint around the ring canvas, similar to Fury’s antics in the build-up to his fight against Usyk’s countryman, Vladimir Klitschko.

One thing, however, is certain, and that is that on Saturday night in Riyadh, boxing will finally have its first undisputed heavyweight since Lennox Lewis in 1999, and first ever of the four-belt era.
