Olympics 2024 LIVE: Team GB eye swimming gold after Simone Biles returns

Simone Biles makes history as first woman to land Yurchenko double-pike at the Olympics

Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is another jam-packed schedule with medals up for grabs in gymnastics, fencing, judo, rugby, shooting, surfing, swimming and table tennis.

American superstar Simone Biles led her team to Olympic gold in the women’s gymnastics final while Team GB gymnasts Becky Downie, Alice Kinsella, Georgia-Mae Fenton, Ruby Evans and Abi Martin agonisingly fell short of a place on the podium.

Nathan Hales won Team GB’s third gold medal of the Olympics with a stunning performance in the men’s trap shooting. In a thrilling fight for gold, Hales beat China’s Qi Ying to achieve a new Olympic record in the event missing just two of the 50 shots in the final.

Still to come in the pool, Britain’s men will try to claim 4x200m freestyle relay gold – a race they won in Tokyo. Duncan Scott, Matt Richards, James Guy and Tom Dean are out to defend their title.

Earlier, the men’s triathlon was postponed at the last minute due to polluted water in the Seine River, with tests revealing water quality levels that were “still above the acceptable limits” for Tuesday’s race to go ahead on time and leaving athletes facing uncertainy.

The reigning Olympic champion in this event Zac Stubblety-Cook takes part in this first semi-final. He hangs back slightly over the opening lap but there’s not much separating all the swimmers.

He’s fourth after the first 100m and is a second quicker than this morning’s heats. Corbeau from the Netherlands turns for home in first place but here comes the champion.

Stubblety-Cook gets the win with a time of 2:08.57.

Daniel Wiffen spoke to BBC TV after winning gold for Team Ireland in the men’s 800m freestyle. He said: “I was writing, ‘I’m going into the history books.’ And that’s exactly what I have done.

“It definitely was [a perfect race] in the way I wanted to execute it. It wasn’t the time that I wanted but you know Olympic finals aren’t about getting the time, it is about getting your hand on the wall first.

“I haven’t seen Andy [his coach], he is somewhere in the building. I’ve got no idea but I’m sure I will see him on that top podium later on.

“I actually heard Nathan [his twin brother] when I was walking out and I thought ‘I can’t believe you have shouted that.’ He was the only person I could hear in the crowd which is pretty ironic, my twin is all I hear.”

Oh wow. This race is a quick one. Tori Huske from the USA flies away from the start and looks to get ahead of the field. She’s beaten to the wall for the turn and has work to do on the return.

Huske touches down in fourth with Australia’s Mollie O’Callaghan winning with a time of 52.75.

Anna Hopkin won’t be in the final.

Anna Hopkin sits in third at the turn in her semi-final race but she’s slowing down over the final 50m and finishes sixth in the race. It’ll be a tough ask for her to get through now.

Siobhan Bernadette Haughey set the pace with a fine 52.64 secs with Hopkin one second further behind at 53.74. She’ll need the second semi-final to swim slower in order to make it through.

Olympics 2024: Biles wins Olympic gold with a little help as USA dominate team final

The all-around team final is a wild circus of a night with flips and spins and falls in all directions, and you need four eyes to watch. But at 8.20pm there was only one routine left to perform, and the room belonged to Simone Biles.

She performed with spring and extraordinary height, the highlight of which was a triple twisting double-back somersault which is hard enough to write, let alone deliver in an Olympic final. The routine contained some flaws on landing but it is a measure of her otherworldly skill that her score of 14.666 was still the best all night by a distance. She sealed gold with a kiss and the Bercy Arena erupted.

Olympics 2024: Swimming – Men’s 800m freestyle – Wiffin wins gold for Ireland!

Goodness me, what a swim, he found something within 20m of the wall, Wiffin lifts himself up, he’s done it. He gestures, putting the phone down and sinks into the water.

Wiffin makes history for Northern Ireland, a first gold in 36 years, he takes an Olympics record for good measure, coming home in 7:38.19!

Bobby Finke won silver for the USA and Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri has a bronze.

Daniel Wiffen bids to make history for Ireland, can he snap a 36-year wait for an athlete from Northern Ireland to win an Olympic gold medal.

The 23-year-old is off to a fine start, and he’s pipped Winnington, of the USA, at the half-way point.

But Finke is right there, as is Paltrinieri, who has pushed on too. This could be a razor-tight finish. That trio now pulling clear.

It’s Wiffin, Finke and Paltrinieri, all within a few tenths of a second as we approach the final 100m. The noise rises, the distance allows for the tension to rise, and we’ve got two lengths left.

The Italian leads by 0.78, to Wiffin… Can the Northern Irishman pull this back?

They’re so close to each other, most here are on their feet, 50m to go, three men, barely separated, 20m to go, it’s going to be Wiffin!
