Why We Rescheduled Kano LG Poll – KANSIEC – Independent Newspaper Nigeria

KANO – The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) on Friday said the Supreme Court landmark verdict on local government autonomy, and other extraneous variables compelled it to rescheduled the Council poll earlier fixed for November 30th November to October 26th, 2024.

The Chairman of the local electoral body, Prof. Sani Lawan Malunfashi told Reporters at press conference that the emerging exigencies favoured shift in the competitive exercise.

Professor Malunfashi said “In recognition and conformity with the recent Supreme Court decision, and the mutual agreement between States and Federal government and upon the expiration of October deadline on local government financial autonomy, we are justifiably impelled to reschedule the already scheduled local government election to 26th 2024 as against 30th November, 2024”

He explained that the change in the election scheduled became imperative for Kano state to join other states that would have completed their local government councils by the end of October.

KANSIEC boss said activities lined up for the exercise were equally rescheduled to accommodate the emerging needs.

He called on the stakeholders to understand “the compelling situation and give the commission your utmost deserving support and cooperation”.

Representatives of major opposition parties were present at the briefing where the reversed timetable was handed over to them.
